That's a clean looking set up! Where did you guys go on that trip? Mexico?

I owned an XR-L in 1994. Had trouble jetting it, but that was mostly my fault.
I rode a friends well set up one recently and was VERY impressed. Trumps my DR650 off road. (But now I've got an Ohlins out back! :p )

I rode my Xchallenge across the country in July; 3 weeks of seeing the N.P.s.
It's capability of doing long distance slab and forest service trails makes it a very versatile bike. Over 9k mi. on it now and no worries. If you are tall, it also is a comfortable bike standing or sitting, (with a modified seat :ride:).

I'd love to see a couple pics of your X Challenge set up for travel. I'm assuming you carried extra fuel? What was your total range? How is the Air Bladder rear suspension working out? Any probs?

What sort of daily mileages were you able to pull on the X ? On my DR650 with the stock seat, I'd be lucky to go 100 to 150 miles until I'd be beat up from the seat.
With the Corbin, all that changes dramatically. 400 mile days, back to back are now possible.

Lots of good pics from Nevada! I've got a few too:

Not traveling here, just dirt riding in the Black Rock.

It's remarkable how effective the Corbin seat is on the DR650...I don't necessarily recommend it for other bikes, but it's really, really, good on the DR.

I was in the Ozarks one day last spring and spent a morning riding around on the gravel. Around noon I pointed the bike for home in Minnesota. I ended up riding all the way home, 770 miles, just because I felt like it. The seat wasn't even an issue.

Don't want to turn this thread into an X Challenge thread, but. I also tour on an X CH. I modified the seat, added painer racks and a set of Ortlib bags and carry extra fuel where the charcoal canister used to reside. I added a "tool tube" made out of PVC pipe for tools and such. I have GPS, XM, MP3 for the long hauls and a tank bag for daily stuff. Works out great. Very comfortable, although I will add a windscreen at some point.

You need to learn to pack light on this bike.......... :smirk:

I will try to attach a link of pix from my PICASA web album for the photos. My extra fuel was carried in a Tourtech container that normally mounts to their metal bags. The range depended greatly on headwinds since I ran a small Cee Bailey's windshield on the trip- approx. 120-150 mi. safely. I figured about 60mpg without the windshield and 50mpg with it.
The air bladder suspension is fine. Only problem is on the road, you can't use those $.50cent compressors at self-serve stations, they can't fill the high pressure shock. Also, when I ride in Big Bear and then back home, the density altitude plays havoc with the shock setting, so you have to be careful and adjust the air accordingly.

I have upgraded the seat to an XPC racing (Murietta, CA) seat and it is as comfortable as my old 1150GSA BMW seat. I didn't have time to get it done before my x-country trip so I used a sheepskin pad which was only just tolerable. I'd highly recommend a seat upgrade in the event of adventure touring.

Good luck with your choice and ride safe!

Looks a tad cramped but you've obviously learned to travel very light, something I'm still working on :bonk:

I never thought about altitude and the air pressure in the Bladder. :foul:
Could you use Co2 cartridges to air up?

The DR works in a variety of configurations depending on mission. Here are a few options:

Posted Image
Top box for the City/commuting. (box holds a helmet ... $60 at New Enough)

Posted Image
These Tusk tank panniers are handy for extra storage. Tank bags don't work well with IMS tank.

Posted Image
Weekend Set up. Tourmaster Duffle. Good for up to 3 days. 200 miles range with IMS tank. (holds 5.2 gallon, sold as 4.9 gal.)

Posted Image
This is GIVI hard bag mode with spare tires. Too much weight for Baja off road and more room than I really needed. 100 lbs. of gear is too much for dual sport rides.

Posted Image
Tour mode with Tecknic bags ($60) w/camping duffle on top. This set up worked for a month long tour out to Colorado via Nevada, Utah and back. Lots of dirt along the way. 3500 miles.

Posted Image
Tourmaster bags with camping duffle. Death Valley and Mojave camping.
This set up is the best compromise for long duration trips with or without camping.

Who He?

Here is one of my "one the road" tool kits for longer trips. This pic is from a few years back and has evolved since. I'm constantly changing things.

I don't have any pics of what I carry in the saddle bags, but I generally have too much crap. But what happens is that you can ditch stuff as you go and buy other stuff you need ... when you need it, not before.

When doing cold weather riding different things come into play. My Gerbing jacket is always carried, and TWO extra sets of gloves, so three sets of gloves total plus a half dozen blue medical gloves. One main riding set, one Winter/waterproof set, and one extra normal set in case gloves get soaked,
lost or stolen.

I've discovered some great fabrics for travel. Quick drying, easy wash, versatile synthetics that are fantastic in heat and super warm (base layer) in freezing temps. They are also super thin, light and pack down to nothing.

I've used a variety of Enduro jackets. Most have tons of pockets. I live out of my jacket and use all the pockets for a variety of things.

When camping my top duffle bag carries ALL the camping gear. Tent, Therma-rest, ground cloth, small down bag, BIVI sack, pillow. I generally don't cook or carry cooking gear. I don't live in the wilderness on purpose when on the road, so generally come close enough to civilization to find meals, libations and friendly locals.

You would also find some food, a medical kit, Wine (in the USA), spare tubes (3 ... one on front fender, two more in panniers) The SLIME pictured is chain lube. SLIME is already IN the tubes, which is how it is supposed to be used. Tire irons live in my skid plate. (I have three)

I loved my WR250R. 16,000+ miles until she was stolen :(

Longest day was 475 miles, 6300 miles to colorado and back from MD this summer w/o missing a beat. Only vehicle I've ever named... I'm gonna miss her.

Somewhere in Oklahoma's Tallgrass Prairie Preserve.

Wolfman Enduro tail and tank bags, with Dirtbagz Scout saddle bags.

Shopping for another one...

Long story short, I had to leave it in the middle of a snow storm, and someone picked her up before I could get back and get her home in a friend's truck. :(
