2007 YZ450F timing

Recommended Posts

How many pins should be between timing marks on a 2007 YZ450F? Theres 13 pins on mine but in the manual the picture has 14. The manual says the two punch marks should line up with the top of the head and the fly wheel mark I should be lined up and it all is but theres 13 pins.

Well, that's fantastic. Not only is counting pins between cams not the right way to time the cams, you gave him the wrong answer. It's 13.

But other than that he gave him pretty good advice!

I hope you did notice Mr. Moderator sir that I did say that I made sure the I on the flywheel was lined up and the punch marks on the cams were lined up then I counted the pins and I am very thankful for the advice.

whoa, whoa, whoa. i called the yamaha dealer just about a week ago when i put mine together and he said "yamaha 450? yeah 14 pins.......with both other marks paralell to the head" it starts easy and runs well. was i given bad info? do i need to tear it back down and re-time?

mine is an 04, do they differ?, but since he didn't ask my year i assumed that all 450's followed the 14pin thing

Read the link I posted.

I DID READ THE LINK YOU POSTED......the conclusion was diffcult to decipher, rather than saying specifically "400/426" it just said "older bike" what constitutes as "old" now i know that you meant the generation prior to the 450

I actually said,
The cams are NOT timed by counting pins between the two 12:00 marks unless you're putting an OEM 450 cam in an earlier model.
...which I thought rather clearly meant "earlier than a 450".

In any case, the dealer was wrong.

Never happens.

Nice avatar. Wrenched many a Hodaka back in the day. My record tear down time was 21 minutes from a bike rolled in to the trans torn down for the stupid shifter spring problem they had. No air tools.

Who knows what PABATCO is?

PABATCO -

EDIT: Pacific Basin Trading Company. They were a farming supply place out of Oregon.... right?

We had Wombats, ACE's and a Road Toad growing up... my dad did all the wrenching at the time. Wish I still had some of those bikes.

ok so i contacted the local performance machine shop (they usually know their asses from a hole in the ground) and i learned this

14 pins is absolutely correct.........for a stock wrf 400/426/450. so the dealer was right and

13 pins is absolutely correct for a yzf 400/426/450

seeing as how despite this thread's title it is in the "WR" forum forgive me for assuming it is the same as a wr

i also learned (something that i may be the last to find out) both timings work for either wr and yz. and by doing 13 pins on a wr it changes the LSA (lobe separation angle) and therefore the power characteristics to that of the YZF, and vice-versa

they called it the "WR cam-mod" and due to the power increase 13 pins has become the standard practice (contrary to service manual) on any yam450

and the "12-o-clock marks" are there for no other reason than to count pins between them

it appears that nobody was "wrong" here. just unaware that in this case there is more than one way to skin a cat

That's not the case at all. 14 pins is wrong for the engine the question was asked about, and giving that advice could have been dangerous.

As far as the timings being interchangeable, this is only partly accurate. In WR/YZ models up to and including the '02, the timing could be switched around as indicated. The intake cams were the same in both models and only the indexing of the exhaust cam in the sprocket was different. So, if you had a WR and wanted more zip, you simply retarded the exhaust cam one tooth:

http://motoman393.thumpertalk.com/tech/yztime.html

The '03-'06 YZ/WR450's had a similar situation with the cams, but there's a wrinkle: Auto Decompression. In each of these years the intake cam is shared between the models. In at least the '03-'05 bikes, the exhaust cams are again the same cams re-indexed. Because the auto decompression pin is in the cam, the AD operation is retarded right along with the cam timing if one attempts to effect YZ timing with the WR cam, and what you end up with is that the exhaust valve is seated so late late that the engine does not have enough compression to start.

The '06 cam may be a different grind than the '06 YZ cam, and not simply re-indexed. The '07 and up WR's use different cams altogether.
