Coolant Smell

Hey Guys,

On some of my recent rides, once the bike warms up a bit, I am smelling coolant.

It smells stronger on the left side of the bike than the right and there are no visible signs of leakage, anywhere. There isn't even any coolant leaking from the weephole. In fact, the level of coolant in the overflow bottle hasn't dropped that much. I haven't had to add to it in well over a year.

My used oil looks fine.

I am just curious and a little bit concerned about this smell.

Or is it just normal?

I've had a similar problem on street bikes. Look around with an LED flash light while the bike is running at temperature. Pay special attention to your hose fittings. If there is a leak the LED light will cause it to glow. You may even see residue were the coolant is running down the hose and dripping on to your header. Remove the light and the residue disappears.

Since there is no fairing on the WR you should try this in a darkened garage or similar place.

Hmm, interesting idea.

Thanks, I'll have to give that a try.

It's probably leaking onto something hot, evaporating, and releasing an odor. The LED light works great.
