so erabeck i got all my stuff today to commence my project of engine guard of carbon fiber. i decided to make a hybrid of carbon fiber and fiberglass. same weave but cheaper when it comes to having to double up on the cloth.
my mailman was too lazy to come up to the door to acctually DELIVER my package of carbon fiber. instead he just threw a note in the mailbox (oops we missed you) even though he never came to the door. so now its sunday and i dont get my CF till monay. i will post the pics of the CF on tomorrow

Dang mailman......:bonk: .....
Ahhhhhh..... I remember the first time I broke my first mold........Kind of like early Christmas.... If you have problems with the fiberglass pulling away from the piece in the corners.......you can just cut the overlap with scissors....up to the mold...... That will relieve the tension..... Cant wait to see it......
Looks like we both a a project running side by side.......

i would deffinetly be interested. i would need the parts you want molded though so i can make a mold of them. unless you have the same bike as i

Make sure you use epoxy resin for that. I know erabeck likes to use polyester resin on his parts, but his bike is a street bike and the parts do not see the abuse of offroad riding. Polyester resin just doesn't hold up offroad at all, especially on an engine guard.

3m is a brand, they make all sorts of things. I was just suggesting that you use a good clear/amber laminating epoxy resin so that the part will not break apart within a few rides.

yeah but i bet 3m only makes one type of resin. idk what it is but it has a boat on the can hah

Not only does 3m make epoxy resin, polyester resin, and vinylester resin, they make about 100 different varieties of each.

Yes, fiberglass turns clear when you put resin on it (or at least semi clear, sometimes it will have a tint depending on the color of the resin).

More important than the type of resin is the resin ratio (ie the amount of resin vs the amount of cloth). I suggest vacuum bagging for anything meant to have any sort of strength in order to ensure that it is durable and has close to the proper amount of resin.

well the thing im gettin at is that needs to be clear because thats the front piece of the carbon fiber right? or do i mold the carbon fiber and resin in that and pull it out?

No, that is not supposed to be the front piece of the CF part. True carbon fiber composite is carbon weave and epoxy resin, nothing more. The best strength to weight ratio is obtained using prepreg carbon, but this is expensive and requires special tools. The next best option is infusion molding, then vacuum bagging, then wet layup. Wet layup is the heaviest and weakest method of making carbon fiber parts, but is good enough for parts used on bikes. By putting fiberglass on the original part and then pulling it off, you are making a mold. You then form your CF part in that mold and pull it out when it is cured.

so if i use the same resin i used on the mold. does that mean my carbon fiber mold and stuff will be yellow? when its all done it will be yellow?

Yes, it will be tinted yellow if your resin is tinted yellow. I'm guessing you are using the 3M polyester resin sold under the "Bondo fiberglass resin" name? That stuff is junk IMO, and won't work well at all for a part that will experience rock hits or roost.
