I have a 250 and love it, but would like a little more poop to it.
I could have the head done (unsure what squish I should shoot for), sx cdi, set x near zero, and check z (not sure what this is??:bonk: )

Or, I have found a 300 head/pv/jug that needs replating for 200 bucks. With this I would also do all of the above.

In your guy's profesional opinion should I pump up my 250 or drop an extra 300 bucks and do the three hundo aproach.

Sorry to the guys who I have been bothering with this for the last month.

DB, if you get the 300 kit, can you get your money out of it if you decide not to use it? I aslo assume if you were to do your initial hop up to the 250, it would have to be repeated if the 300 kit went in.

Do you like the way the 250 revs?

Where do you want more power from?

What don't you like about the 250's power characteristics?

IMHO, you know what you have with your 250. The true condition of the 300 kit is unknown. It could have issues such as hairline cracks, etc, that are not evident. Also, you say it's needs replating.

Why not call a tuner such as Clay at Munn, Jman at J Bone, or Slavens and ask them their opinion?

Calling the pro's is a good idea, thanks.
I like the way the 250 rev's, maybe could rev a tad faster, not too much though.
I would like a little more power everywear, just to bump the entire curve up. I don't want a big hit (I rode a 93 kx 250 once and almost killed several people and the bike, this is undesireable). I don't want 500 style torque, breaking traction on the tight stuff is not for me.

Trying to think about what I don't like and cant really come up with much. I love how I can bring it to almost 1 rpm. I have perposly tried and it is rediculus how low this motor will actually run, then just jam down a gear and off you go. The top end (pm) is great, could use a little bump here but I am hardly ever fifth gear pinned. And the mid range is smooth and comfortable.

The more I think about it the more I am leaning towards; head cut (gotta find out what squish should be), sx cdi (cant find one to save my life), set the z (not sure what this is, but my manual tells me what it should be), and set the x with a fresh top end. This bike is on its original piston and rings so I would assume the x and squish are not optimal. Also fresh parts should make it feel "new."

I might just be buying the hype of the 300 crowd. Not to say they are not great bikes, but so is my 250

If you like the rev and want it to rev a little faster, then the 300 kit is probably not the way to go. Sounds like you have it figured out.

Head mod, new top end, cdi, etc will make a big difference over a worn stock engine. Consider porting as well. You can also add the CDI later if you can't come by one now.

Dirt what powervalve spring do you have in the bike? If you want it to come on the pipe faster go with a lighter spring or back the adjuster out a turn or so. A few little adjustments can make a big difference on these bikes. Also what jetting are you running? A lot can be had in this department also as far as lowend torque and snappyness. I don't buy the 300 bs either. I just noticed it is a 04 the SX head will do that thing wonders, or like was stated get the head cut by somebody that knows what they are doing. CJ

Jetting is good, a tad rich when its cold inlower elevations. Other then that it runs great. Plug has always looked great. I am currently running the red spring, I have to see how I like it in the single track.

Just an update and fyi. I put an 05 sx cdi and coil on my 04 exc. It fit, and runs good. I just gave it the back yard, not sure of the "power bump" yet. Hopefully it will add a little poop too her.
