I have a 09 250 sx, and it does not make any noises resembling a "bang" at idle or any other speed. Better get someone familiar with smokers to give it a listen.

I know what you are talking about , my 09 300xc does the same thing. Your fine.

Mine too. Although its more of a knock than a bang.

if it's knocking at idle, just make sure it's not a lean knock.

what gas/oil mixture do you guys use? like 1:60 or so?
to lean?

I use 40:1, as 60:1 seems too lean on oil. I have the JD jet kit in mine. I asked James about ratios, and he suggested 40:1, or even 32:1 if I wanted.

How do you know if its a lean knock?

I run 60:1, have run 50-55:1 in yz250s for years, no dramas.

KTM manual says 60:1, if its good enough for them, its good enough for me.

why do ppl tend to run their ktm's leaner than japs?

60:1 is recommended by KTM. Actually it says from 40-60:1. I hit right in the middle at 50:1. Thing is, 60:1 is richer because there is more fuel. more fuel makes a cooler engine. You need enough to lube the moving parts and the syn oils are better than they used to be.

Pick a ratio and jet to it.

To see if it's a lean knock, run the AS in a half turn at a time to see if it goes away. A lean knock is pretty evident, almost sounds like the engine is coming apart.

Mine purrs at idle so I'm struggling to understand this "normal" ping.

Also, I experimented w/ lots of oil ratios and I settled on 32:1. Lives a long time and runs really strong like that w/ no spooge at all.

That's kind of what I was thinkin, but it's been awhile since I had my SX.

As long as you jet to the oil mix, it can run well with lots or less oil in the mix. I don't run a bike hard and spend most of time below the belt chuggin thru technical terrain in the woods.

This has proven to be an interesting thread, and I'm still puzzled about this noise at low rpm. It seems like some of us never hear it at all, and I think that those of us who don't hear it are running more oil in the gas (32:1 or 40:1). It would be interesting if one of you guys that hears the noise would try a richer oil ratio, and see if the noise goes away.

I think it's jetting related, personally. oil ratio affects jetting. I ran my SX at 44:1 and it purred, but I had it jetted correctly. I am sure I would remember a ping at idle.

As I said, adjust the AS in and see if it changes, simple than changing the oil mix.

Does the noise go away when you pull the clutch in?

I can do some testing on Friday. I've got a new needle, (on tt advice), a n3ej to fit & get my jetting sorted. I know my air screw is 2&1/2 - 3 turns out, but I'm sure the knock doesnt go away when I richen it up. I can try a different ratio, but not for a week or two.
Its not a constant knock, just a random occurrence off-throttle when revving the bike on the stand. It is probably more predominate when cold, but I will post again after I have sorted the jetting, and I will take more notice of this knock.
I will try the clutch, but I'm sure its engine noise, on the left.

with that more detailed descrip, it may not be jetting related. Jetting still should be right, though.
