Guys,

I bought a 2006 xc-w last weekend from a guy that only put 15 hours on it. I thought it was a great deal given the price and expected a couple of items that would need a little tlc. I rode it 15 minutes and every fluid leaked (gas, oil and coolant/thermostat). I was a little disappointed to say the least. Now here is the good news. I spent 30 minutes looking up a couple of posts: i) gas cap recall, 2) coolant leaks and 3) counter shaft sproket leaks.

I ordered the parts on-line for less than $100 dollars and all of them arrived at my HOUSE by Friday. I spent Saturday morning bolting on some part and took it for a test ride this afternoon.

The bike rocks! All of the fixes worked flawlessly! I can't wait for a long ride tomorrow afternoon...

Thanks for all the help and info on this website!

Great. I have the exact bike. I did upgrade to the 07 CDI for the dual MAP and 07 air box graphics (didnt like the 06 graphics) and I love the bike.

One follow-up.

The bike came with a carbon fiber skid plate. Looks cool, but is a royal pain when changing the oil. Do people just trim the skid plate down or does that destroy the strcuture of the carbon fiber?

Any suggestions for alternative skid plates that allow for easy oil changes?

ktm 2 strokes are the only bikes that can be made street legal. they pass emissions, at least thats what ive heard.

I also have a 04 250 EXC two stroke that is plated, in NJ of all places! The bike originated in NY state and was plated/titled there, then transferred seamlessly into NJ when I bought it. Unfortunately it's not completely street legal as it doesn't have a valid inspection sticker (no turn signals, horn, brake switch, or mirror) but I'm working on that.

As for the skidplate interfering with oil changes, I can easily get the bolt out but some oil gets on the skidplate. It's easier to blast it with the pressure washer than to remove the skidplate.

Hey, I 'm an ultra picky technician by trade of many years and hate anything mechanical that isnt 100% perfect, both in appearance and performance. Hate anything that is broke and fix it ASAP, even if its going to be put up for the winter, it has to be 100% mechanically perfect when I take it out for a ride. My buddy tells me there is "medicine" for that. I tell him I'm fine! :smirk: :ride:

I just cut up a beer can to kinda look like a funnel. When I drain the tranny juice I tilt the bike and spill very little. It also is a great way to inspect the fluid as it comes out. What little oil gets spilled can be wipped/washed away.
