fork air pressure

how much air pressure do you guys put in your forks? my buddies 2007 klr650 does not seem to have any. thanks for the help.

If they are the same as the KLR 600, they should work on atmospheric pressure, which means that when the forks are extended, there is no air pressure inside, but when they are compressed, the pressure will increase.

Do your mates forks work alright?

why would there be air valves on top of the forks if you are not supposed to put air in them?

They changed their minds about how forks work in the 90's.... in the 80's air was used to adjust for load. In the 90's someone decided that they should have ambiant pressure.

The manual says to use the valve to zero out the pressure. But many of us use 10-20 psi to adjust the function of the forks.

The BEST thing you can do to KLR forks is drain out the old oil, remove the springs, collapse the forks and add oil until it is 165-170mm from the top. The manual says 190, but the older 600 was 170. This makes a huge differance in brake dive and overall stability.... even with the stock springs. Stick with a quality 10wt fork oil. If you want, try 10psi on top of that.... totally different bike for the price of some oil.

Don't just add the reccommended book amount.... measure it in the tube. I checked a couple dozen bikes & the only ones that were close to even the stock numbers were ones that the owner had done himself.
