WR as good as yzf to race??

I was at my dealer today and he said that my bike (01 426 wr) is not made to race and that i should buy the 450 yzf. Setting the fact that they want to sell bikes, how much better is a yzf over a wr for mx. I have changed the seat and tank, removed the lights. At this point does my bike weigh close to the yzf plus the coil and extra gear? What can I do to help my wr more race friendly, besides all the free mods.

Or should i risk a divorce and trade in for the 450? ?

Keep your bike, order some how to ride Gary Bailey videos, or take a REAL riding class, get into decent shape, practice and kick EVERYBODY's butt.

If my intention was to race strictly moto and no offroad, I would buy the YZ. In any other scenario, the WR is a better all-around bike. Look around. You may find many guys at your local track racing WR's with YZ plastic. With the free mods, the WR is so close to the YZ, that most people couldn't tell the difference in power anyway. All the important stuff is the same. Kevin is right, the rider makes all the difference.

Both the WR and the YZ are Race bikes, always have been always will be. I and many others here have been successfully racing WR's for years...Your on the right track fo what you want to do.

Where do these idiot dealers come from. The level of stupidity is sometimes astounding. This is not a crack on the knowledgeable dealers/riders that are well known here on TT.

Good Luck Dude...You can always get your straight answers here then go to the dealership and tell them what you want.

After all the free mod's, plastic and the suspention dialed in your WR is a very competitive MX mount. If you are very aggressive

you might want to look at heavier springs and

revalving your suspetion.

I've done most of the mods and went with stiffer springs, before i got the yz seat/tank i was still passing alot of yzs on the track,clearing the big tables,and pretty good sized doubles. Now they just don't know that it is a WR passing them! ? The yz muffler made a big difference also!!!

I agree with Kaze and the rest of you. But If I were to just moto I'de get a 2-stroke. The WR is totally a race bike, just more versitle to do most types of riding/racing than the YZF.

PS: how are you gonna feel after spending $6500 on the new ride when three guys on slightly modified WR's smoke you into the weeds? How do you 'splain that one to the wife?

I have riden the new 450 and wouldn't sell my 99, YZ'd, WR for one and get back into debt. It has a slightly wider powerband (didn't have the mid-range hit of the old YZf's...... smooother bottom end power and through the transition) and was lighter but, wouldn't make me any faster.

To me it would be like a $6500 mod to my bike ?

Oh and my bike is ridden 99.99999% on the track. The Dub-R is more versatile. And just as fast with the same rider.
