Well as you guys can imagine there has been snow on the ground for at least a month around here, so i haven't gotten the chance ride my bike in almost that long. It also hasn't been started in about a month either. I just got a yz pipe and went out to start her up and wash it up real good. When i went to kick the bike it didn't have very much compression at all, I could kick right through the compression stroke. :) the bike still started after a few kicks. I let it idle with the choke on for a few mintes then shut the choke off, and when I went to rev the bike above 1/4 throttle it looked like a puff of smoke was comming out. nothing at idle.I shut off the bike and left it alone for now. What could be causing it? and what should I do about it. Or am i just parionid or something, it was still cold enough out that i could see my breath.....any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance. :D

I'd suggest you go out and ride it before you rush to think you've got a failure. It didn't even get fully warmed up. If it's smoking after a good long ride, then start looking.

well my plan is to yz time and throw the stock yz pipe on the bikes, should i just go ahead with that and cheack the valve clearances while im in there? or wait and ride it first?

Since it as been setting for a long time take it out and ride it untill is is FULLY warmed up. Then turn it off and start it again. Remember get the bike nice and hot and if you can still kick it through it's compression stroke then you need to check you valve clearances. If it is still smoking then check and make sure that your rings are still in good conditions and check anyththing else that could cause oil get burned up.

I would also add that I saw the same kind of behavior from mine. I decided that maybe the gas that had been sitting in the take for a while might not be in the best condition. I drained the tank and the carb bowl then added fresh gas and no more smoke.

Another thought is the pipe itself, when I got a new pipe my bike smoked for quite a bit once the pipe heated up, scared me too. I guess it was burning of any oil residue left from manufacture.

2003YZ250FRACER is on the right track. After your bike has sat for awhile (at least a month) some oil seeps past the rings. When you start it up again, they'll heat up and reseal, but that residual oil is burned, causing the smoke. The longer the bike has sat and the older the rings are, the worse it will be. The smoke should be gone or very minor by the second start, otherwise I would replace them. The loss of compression was more than likely deposits built up on the exhaust valve being open while you stored it (another common problem). IF the compression is bad and it smokes again after it has been run (more than just idling), your rings are bad.
