Im gonna check my flywheel (rotor) for cracks, or loose rivets

Since the eventual cracks is on the backside i need a puller, what thread is it in the flywheel? Same as YZ?

I think there is different flywheels for WRF and YZF.

thanks

The 03's use a more conventional 2 stroke type puller, but the 01-02's use the type that has 3- 6mm bolts on a 50 mm bolt circle that thread into the flywheel hub and the conical tipped center fine theaded bolt that applies the force. The folks I've spoken with that have revoved 02 and earlier fly wheels said they had a hell of a time getting the flywheel to break loose off the taper, and had to encourage it with sharp blows from a hammer to the center puller bolt, which caused the 10x1.25 mm thread on the crank to swell out and required some thread pitch file action to allow the nut to thread back on when putting the flywheel back on. Moral of this story is don't pull your flywheel unless you have to, you can determine if the rivets are getting loose without removing it. Just take off the cover and check it out. After having to rework my thread on the crank I see why yamaha changed the type of flywheel puller in 03.

Strange, i have conventional threads in my flywheel (YZ250F-02). About 26mm, just dont know if thread is 1.0, 1.25, or 1.50mm.
Going to that sad bikeshop tomorrow with the bike to get the right one... :)

Well apparently it's just the WR's that have the old style 3 bolt connection flywheel puller, I know it weighs more and maybe it is completely different than the YZF's.The yamaha shop showed me the new puller for the 03 models and I just assumed the 02 yzf's used the same flywheel puller as my 02 WR.

Be careful when pillin off the flywheel. So much force is required that when it finally breaks loose it may jump off and land on the floor and compromise the ceramic magnet. That happened to my 01 WR and I found the magmet moving away from the rotor, and had to purchase a new magneto.

OK, I am rebuilding my top end with a new center intake valve and Eric Gorrs 262 kit on my 01 WR250F. I thought I would replace the cam chain, since it was only $16. But now, after not having the non-standard flywheel puller and reading these posts, maybe I should bag the cam chain replacement. What do you guys think?

mike,
get the correct puller and change the cam chain. you have enough miles on it to do it. call up Thumper and ask them about cam chains. they say once a year regardless.
so, do the right thing since it is already apart.
what's that old saying? "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" or is it, "pay me now or pay me later".

Steve, did you have any problem pulling yours? Where did you get the puller? Looks like it would be easy to make.

mike,
the WR and YZ are completely different.
i bought the motion pro tool ($22) and it takes all of 1 second with the impact air wench to pop it off. this tool works on ALL of the 2smoke models as well.
the wr requires a 3 prong screw in with center bolt. if my memory is right. you *might* be able to rent one from autozone or a simular place. measure out the distances and threads sizes first.
