Air filter Questions

Recommended Posts

I was wondering what the best type of Aftermarket Air Filter would be best suited for the WR450. I was thinking about the K&N, but I have been told that were problems with them plugging up when doing off roading-- What else does anybody suggest:bonk:

The SEARCH button is a great tool to answer your question and it gets easier to use with practice. However, FYI, I ordered a genuine Yamaha air filter for my WR450F, by part number. The filter came in a Yamaha package, and the filter had Twin Air printed on it. Over the years, I have tried a number of foam air filters, including Uni-Filter. I found that Uni-filters were too restrictive and caused the motor to run rich. Rich enough that on a two-cycle engine, I had to rejet to a leaner condition.

I've obviously tried Twin Air's and found them to be an excellent choice. I've owned many motorcycles over nearly 40 years of riding. I have however, always found the stock air cleaner to be the best choice for whatever motorcycle that I owned at the time (caveat here, the paper filters that came on my early Husqvarna250CR's were not the hot setup for wet off-road conditions). Think of the money the factory spent paying an engineer to determine the best combination of air flow and filtation for the application for which the motorcycle was to be marketed. Do you think that the engineer also thought as he developed his project that it would be a good thing to specify an air filter that would ruin the motor and make it run poorly?

There is endless discussion on this forum and all over the Internet about K&N filters ( SEARCH button for Thumpertalk). Bottom line, K&N's are for all out racers who will be rebuilding the engine in their race vehicle on a regular basis. They are a complete waste of money for the average guy who is going to drive/ride his car/truck/motorcycle down the highway to work and to the super market. Think about the claims from K&N, "Best air flow--- Best filtration". What is wrong with this picture?

Has anyone tried the disposable foam Ready Filters? I would not want to use one as normal use, but for destination rides (baja) where you don't want to be cleaning filters, bringing along a few extras of these seems like a good way to go. Anyone have any experience with them?

Moose has worked well for me... they have a neoprene mating surface that does not require any kind of rim grease.

The OEM filters are excellent and have more surface area than any aftermarket filter I have seen... but they are spendy - $40:foul:

I have used the disposable filters on my son's YZ 125, they are actually pretty good filters and I have cleaned and re-used them too!

I have heard bad things abotu the K&N... for my money and my bike, I would not use a pleated paper filter for off road riding....

I've been a UNI filter customer for many years. No issues.

+1 :banghead:

3 WR's over 25K miles (combined) and not one valve adjustment...:banghead:

Don, I know what you mean...I really like the OEM filter but not when I can buy almost 2 quality aftermarket filter for around the same price!

I use them, but re-clean them instead of throwing them away, they are thin, but if you clean them enough they work fine. I also have a couple UNI filters that are great. As long as you clean them enough you aren't really going to have any problems.

Once the stock filter was soiled I pulled it out and put it in a bag. I now use No-Toil on Twin-airs. Im thinking about adding the stocker back into the rotation. Any suggestions on getting the stock oil off the filter?

Gasoline.... take the dirty gas and dump it on your weeds. If your neighbor gives you a dirty look, light it on fire... Happy Earth Day:busted:

Go to Rocky Mountain ATV online and order you 2 No-Toil air filters and a filter recharge kit. The No-Toil filters work excellently and are way cheaper than K&N. That's what all my friends and myself run. Why 2? Clean and oil one up and put it in a big ziplock bag... When service time comes you don't have to spend two hours waiting for it to dry... you can be twisting it back in 20 minutes.... Oh yeah, we run them on the WR 450, just fyi.

I was at the motorcycle warehouse in sydney (mca) today and they have a K&N demo filter stand at the counter with a K&N filter fitted to a vacuum pump with a tube sticking up and a ping pong ball going up and down showing the high air flow of the K&N filter. I put my hand on the filter and the ball dropped down=no air flow The guy behind the counter said "Now look at this" and he swapped the K&N for a paper element filter and hey presto ball stays down = no air flow!

I then asked him "If the K&N filter was OILED?" he said "NO"!!

I then asked "Is the K&N warranty valid if the filter is not oiled?" he said "NO"

So i said" well that demo is a bit lame don't you think? Have you asked the K&N sales rep about that?" (demo stand/unoiled fliter)

He said "I (me) will have to take it up with the rep" and walked off.

What a deception.
