wheel swap, YZ to WR

Recommended Posts

i need to replace my rimes and hubs on my '05 wr450f. i have been looking at the DNA complete wheel sets. the only issue is that they only list them for the YZ. that not a problem for the rear tire, but the front is different.

my question is, what do i need to do to make a YZ front hub fit a WR?

the only difference is the odometer. looking at the parts listing it looks like maybe just a spacer will work but i want to make sure before i spend the money.

so, does anyone know the answer?

i dont need the odometer (havent used it for years) so loosing it is no big deal. i just need to know what parts to order to make this work.

thanks,

laramie ?

Wow a question that was specifically designed for me! I also have the '05 WR and just bought DNA wheels. SWEET! Black rims with blue hubs! I've been using a Trail Tech computer ever since the bike was new so switching to a YZ wheel is just fine with me. Now I don't have to deal with the special spacer on the right side. DNA wheels come with the spacers you need (yes, is the same as a YZ), but won't work with the stock speedo obviously. DNA is planning on making a hub for the newer stock electronic speedos for WR's, but not ready yet. I will be taking a picture of the bike on Saturday if you want to see it. Looks really good with the blue frame.

so if i read this correctly, you just bolted them right up?

if that is the case, it looks like i will be ordering some pretty quick. the rims i got on now are trying to KILL me.....?

what do you think of the quality of the rims/hubs so far? what about the spokes? i'd like to hear from someone who has used them for a bit.

thanks,

To use a YZ wheel on the wr you have two options. You can delete the factory odometer drive and just use the yz spacer or if you want the odometer then you need to replace the bearing seal on the right side w/ a Wr seal and then it will be compatible w/ the mechanical drive. Just make sure this wheel manufacturer uses yamaha style seals.

In my opinion Max, its not worth the hassle. Use a trail tech, etc. and go with the YZ set up. Maybe if I had a newer bike with the nice computer, I would figure something else out or wait for them to make the hub that will work.

640, yes, they bolt straight up. My son has been using a set of DNA wheels on his YZF 450 for over a year now with no problems. Before I bought my new set for the WR, I mounted his front wheel onto my bike to make sure no problems and it fits like its meant to be. Just make sure whoever mounts your tires, that they use rim protectors to keep them looking nice. Quality looks alot better than Warp wheels, uck! The beefy stainless steel spokes look nice too, will be easier to clean. I got a killer deal on my set, couldn't turn it down!

Yes I agree. I run a vapor as well but, i was just giving my opinion based on the cheapest/ easiest alternatives short of spending another hundred.

thanks guys, looks like i will be ordering a set of those along with some new wave rotors. i know all my buddy's are gonna give me crap about the "bling" factor but what the hell. they look like nice wheels and i can get a KILLER deal for the set.

as for the stock excel's, i replaced them about 2 years ago with another "aftermarket" company which i wont name. needles to say i wish i had spent the money back then and gotten some real wheels.....

laters,
