K&N filters..Whats your opinion?

I'm thinking of getting a K&N air filter for the wr400 as the old white power filters are a bit manky and maybe not that good anyway(there was a paste on the the back of the inlet valves) .I have had two K&N's on my car for the last five years and am happy with them.Whats the verdict on K&N for dirtbikes?

I was not happy that the previous owner of my 2004 F150 had installed a K&N on it. I hate driving it in any dusty conditions. K&N filters pass more air because they pass more dirt too. Even there own advertising says they filter better as they get dirty.

Foam soaked air filter oil is the only way to go! ?

They suck, suck dirt into your engine that is.

No but really I've seen people run them with an outerwears prefilter and they work just fine and keep everything clean just like a foam filter. But the outside gets dirty very fast, seemingly faster than foam and you have to clean it more often.

I bought a K&N for a 2005 KFX. In the instruction it states not to remove the stock filter and the K&N was to be installed In addition to the stock filter. What a waste!

just buy two air filters foam and buy a litre of air filter oil...

then you can take your time cleaning one while driving with the other.

thats what i do... pays to keep it as clean as possibly in the air box and filter.

Yes, really they do allow dirt to pass into the engine. They were designed to allow maximum air to pass with just enough filtration to keep out the big particles. It is assumed that you are using the filter on a racing engine that will be rebuilt on a regular basis. Foam filters, regularly serviced are the way to go on a non-competition dirt bike.

Check out jetting-intake. Eddie Sisneros Did some testing with the Dyno. He found that the was no change with the stock air filter and no filter or filter with the screen removed.

So if your trying to gain performance the K&N probably not going to help.

K&N is actually better in terms of both increased airflow and filtration IF they are oiled and prepped absolutely perfectly. The problem is that that is so much more difficult to accomplish than it is with foam that it just about never happens. Both media types depend on oil to actually trap and hold dirt. The media by itself, especially with foam, won't really stop much of anything, and only when 100% of the entire mass of filter media is coated with oil will it function as it should.

With foam, you can squeeze and knead the material until the oil is worked all the way through and the excess is removed. That is not possible with pleated gauze, and the filter will more often than not be either over or under oiled.

Even when oiled properly, gauze elements can't trap and hold as much dust as foam can, and so they must be changed out more frequently. As I find it necessary in the SoCal desert to change my foam elements every ride day as it is, that wouldn't work well for me.

A bit crazy that this is my first post here but MAN it is a breath of fresh air (pun not intended) to see guys giving the thumbs down to the K&Ns. In all the car circles I run in it's always a hot topic, often split with more favoring the K&N despite proof that they either flow better OR filter better, but not both at the same time. Sure it flows well but you're not filtering...or heck it's filtering well but flowing like arse!
