trouble starting brand new bike

Recommended Posts

I just bought brand new 09 yzf 450. I roughly have 15 running hours on it . Im having a hell of a time starting the bike. Once i get it to run it has no problem for the rest of the day. I took it back to yamaha they showed me that im kicking it to hard , like how u kick a 2 stroke. One hard quick kick.A smooth soft kickm does start it more easily but imstill having to kick it 30 -50 kicks. Does anybody know whats going on? Do i need to check my valves? Shoulnt a brand new bike fire right away?Any other 09 yzf450 Having the same problem?

Please all advice would be appreciated

Upon cold start up, I usually like to twist the throttle 2-3 times to prime the cylinder with fuel. Pull out the choke, then DON'T TOUCH THE THROTTLE and kick with all your weight and follow through. If it doesn't fire on the first kick, try the procedure from start to finish one more time. If it still doesn't start then you have an issue!

Follow the manual on checking your valve clearances, it's really simple. I have seen brand new bikes from the factory with the valve shimming way off, but once set properly the yamaha valves wont budge for hundreds of hours if the air filter is kept clean.

Give the throttle 2 or 3 twists before trying to start...pull out the choke.....push kick start down slowly one full stroke....then back up top...push down slowly til you can't.....then let it back up....& kick it hard.

It will start right up.

Just do what i said before you try anything else.....this is a cold engine start.

Report back ?

I roughly have 15 running hours on it .

lol definitaely not 15 hours yet brad, not even close. no more than 4-5 running hours.

You need to have your valves checked after the break in they are prob out of specs making it hard to start!

exactly, if anything itll be his intake valves.

Do other experienced 4 stroke riders have trouble starting your bike? If so, then something is wrong with the bike. If not, then you need to work on your 4 stroke starting technique.

im an experienced 4 stroke rider. I dont have quite as much trouble as badburn, but it still is sometimes harder than normal to start.

but I agree, its all in the technique. I can start my crf 450 while sitting down on the seat. you need a strong kicking leg!

Is the jetting correct?

yes it is. maybe not perfect, but its pretty close. (stock)

As others have posted on first cold motor start of the day twist the throttle through two full revolutions. Get good squirt of fuel into the intake. Then pull the choke push kick starter through one time easy. Then let it back up and jump on it usually starts one or two kicks. If I don't twist throttle takes ten to twelve kicks.

I highly, highly doubt that your valves are out of spec...that simply does not happen with Yamahas that soon.

Chances are you just need to give it a twist of the throttle and then medium speed full kick. Do not twist the throttle at all while kicking it.

What are the temperatures that you are riding in?

You guys are completely right i turned the fuel on, twisted the throttle 3 times pulled the choke she fired 2 kick. I very glad to know it was my error and not a mechanical one .

Thanx alot guys

Good! I just got my 08 YZ450 last week and I experienced a little bit of that issue the first time I started it, kicked and kicked and kicked and she finally went but it was tough. Then the next couple times I tried priming it, just twisted the throttle open prob 4 or 5 times and with the choke out she lights up 2nd or 3rd kick. ? By the way I absolutely LOVE the bike!
