Same bike, same weight, same suspension... with a plate! I wouldn't want a dual sport bike, instead I'd want a dirt bike with a street legal license, similar to what KTM has done.
A 450 version of the wr250x would not interest me because of the reduced power and the increased weight.

Don't forget to vote on the poll maurice!
I'll say this. If yamaha followed the exc-r/TE mold and brought us a 50 state street legal WR at a lower price point I would buy one instead of pricing out D/S stuff right now.
BTW that Honda owners survey inspired this thread/poll

Even though I don't own a honda, I lied and submitted a survey anyways
. I encourage anyone that wants more options in this segment to submit a survey. The Japanese need to bring these things in uncastrated, 50 state legal racebike trim to market.

I am assuming the difference between the SM and Off Road versions would just be the wheel sets and brakes?

I guess you would have seen these before, but here they are again.
When we get ours stock,
it has a throttle screw in that restricts it to half trottle,
the air box is chocked up,
there is no AIS, the tyres are street legal,
It has a bigger headlight to meet street legal,
Blinkers, mirrors, horn,
Front and rear brake operated brake light.

Once you get rid of all that stuff and put on the spares kit, the bike is the same as yours, without the AIS of course. We still get your headlight in the spares and most people have changed to the smaller one.

Its pretty obvious where I am coming from. I would love to have the magic button. but for that to happen for me I am looking at a new KTM or Husky. The BMW looks interesting but does not seem to be getting favorable reviews.
Being a resident of the Republic of Kalifonia a plated bike opens up a lot of opportunities for sweet trail access.
I even have thoughts of putting a 450 motor in the 426 frame. Then I come to my senses and realize that at some point I will need to replace the old worn bike with a new one.
That Aussie Production WR 450 would be perfect for me. I fear that by the time it made it to California it would be an overweight underpowered pig with tons of unnecessary gear on it.

well ya thats pretty much what I envisioned. The SM models would have gigantic brakes and a radial front master cylinder. For the RFMC its already in the R1 parts bin so it shouldn't be a problem.

In Italy the Enduro must be street legal because during competition they have to travel on streets to connect trails and tracks.
I had a WR450F my 2005, very nice bike. I use to love it but I puto 10/15.000 kms every year and it needed to much maintainance.
Thus I would like a WR450F frame with a WR450R-like motor.
A WR450 with 2 liters of oil in the case, steel valves and such would be great!

If KTM can do it, then yamaha should also be able to do it. It'll take time for the Japanese to realize KTM is dominating this market that they are missing out on. I would guess 2 years before we see a plated blue, green, red, or yellow bike.

Hey, what dual sport kit is that or did you just buy the stuff and throw it on there? That is one sharp looking kit, best I've seen for the WR.
Oh wait a second after reading again, Yamaha makes them like that for Austrailia, or do the dealers put all that stuff on them?

I think one review of the bmw mention something to the effect of "screwed the pooch!". Thats disappointing at this point because I am a huge fan of bmw street bikes.
I have been eyeballing the husky310 lately. I am having way too much fun on my yz250 these days.
I am beginning to understand the "less is more" mentality and would like to downsize my 450 to something lighter. (Love the power, hate the weight for the really technical stuff)

There is a company in Melbourne that does it for you.
You can buy the parts from Yammi dealers in Australia.

might be getting old but I like the chain guard on Looks450 bike, is it as delivered from Japan or fitted by OZ dealer?

It depends. I have a wr450 with a plate and very few items to make it street legal. I rarely ride it on the street anymore because it burns through the tires and makes the trail traction less. It's not comfortable to spend much time on- on the street. It would be nice to have more of a street friendly version available. I don't think there really is a best of both worlds. There is street bikes, dual sport bikes and trail bikes. The wr450 is a trail bike. A dual sport bike is never going to do as good as a true enduro bike on the trails. You can't have a great single track weapon and a daily road commuter in one. Just like you can't have a car that flies to Hawaii from LA. If your going to race supermoto start building and don't worry about it being street legal or straight out of the box.
