folks, need some help here. if you read my 2002 six days of michigan writeup you know that one of my problems was that after just a few days my butt was killing me. i have the "std" SDG YZF-style seat on my WRF.

i'm looking for a softer seat, one with a bit more foam in it that will squish down to the regular height. hence i wrote to SDG and here's what they said:

No, there all the same density...
if your looking for a soft you can call Ceet they make a soft foam...

Thanks
Jerry

Hi,

I have one of your standard seats on my '01 250F. But for
long distance trail riding, I'm looking for a softer seat.
Is your 'Tall' model seat the same firmness as the standard
seat? Or does it squish down more and provide a little more
comfort? Note that I don't need a 'Tall' seat per se (I'm
5'10") but I do need more foam underneath my butt. A six day
enduro with your standard seat leaves a lot to be desired,
since it was designed for MX applications.

Thanks for any advice/insight/etc.

it seems that the SDG tall seat is just that, taller, and not any softer. so then, what do you guys recommend for a softer YZF seat? anyone got one and what do you think of it?

thanks

lots of the ktm guys have same problem

here's what many of them do:

-remove seat, place upside down in clamp to stabilize
-With a 3/16" or 1/4" drill, drill a geometrical series of small holes in the seat foam (not sure what the undercarriage of the seat on the WR's looks like - you might need to remove seat cover and work with the foam directly)
-Start with just a few holes (maybe a row of 3 holes across, five lengthwise) - you can always go softer
-Throw seat back on bike and give it a test ride

This should soften things up a bit. If it's not better, what have you lost? you were gonna buy a new seat anyway

good luck

forgot to mention, don't drill all the way through the foam - stop about 1" before the seat cover

Wrooster,

I put the Ceet tall/ soft foam on my WR, and am selling it because of the squish factor. The density is definitely softer that stock, it's nice on the butt for long rides but because of the squish I find im still to cramped. I went with a tall seat because of my height, but because the foam is a tall/soft I didn't get as much of a height increase as I wanted. So if your looking for a softer compound and you don't want to lose any height, maybe even gain a little height, I would say maybe the Ceet foam is the way to go.

Try www.gutsracing.com for the best foam by far! They make 3 different densities.

I too am looking for answers to the hard ass seat problem. I rode a friends crf450 and they only thing I came away with freaking out over was how nice and comfy the seat was compared to my yzf. Honda sure has the seat down pat, that is for sure.

Wrooster,
I have the FX Factory Effex stock/soft seat on my '02, and it is a world of difference in density. I street ride my WR, and the stocker was comprable to a cement slab :)!Even though they claim it to be stock height It did add about 1/4" of extra height. Any dealer can get them from Parts Unlimited. Here are the P/N's. They retail for about $54.00

FX03-0145 YZ tall/soft
FX02-0634 YZ stock/soft
FX03-0146 WR tall/soft
FX03-0147 WR stock/soft

Good luck,
Rich

Like Polar Bus, I have the factory effex standard soft foam. Its a tiny bit taller than stock, but more squishy. If you're tall you might check out the tall, soft foam. The factory effex foam is softer than stock, but I still wear bicycle riding pants.

OK, so the seat is a bit on the firm side. It's just like my KTM 200EXC, so I'm already acclimated to it. I sit down way too much when riding, but I have found the bicycle shorts with the gel foam insert is the answer. With a snap-on tool chest in my fanny pack, I can't get my 40+ years hindquarters off the seat! :)

silverfox,
with a fanny pack on i had the same "butt heavy" feeling too. so when i did my last distance ride (2002 six days of michigan) i dumped the fanny pack and got a rear fender mounted bag. i put all of my heavy stuff in there (T-handles/irons/etc) and the light stuff i put in my camelback pocket (GPS/powerbars/etc). in the end i think it saved a lot of wear and tear on me -- i think i stood up and sat down about 6000 times in 600 miles, or about 10 times per mile.

anyway, something to think about. i'm getting a new seat though.

:)

in my 2002 six days of michigan writeup you can see my bike with the fender pack, and in the text is the list of all of the stuff i had in it.

Something else to consider, is the Factory Effex tall and firm foam. It's supposed to be as firm as stock, but it really is quite a bit softer. As delivered, the firmness is about right, but I'm a little concerned that it may become flabbed out over time. I'll check back next summer. Ceet foam on the Zuke was too firm at first, but is perfect after a 1/2 dozen rides.

You can order the foam at www.factoryeffex.com but the price will be retail. Check your local dealers and parts guys; they should be able to order thru Parts Unlimited.

Anyone know what type of seat foam Honda uses? I still can't get over how comfy the stock Honda seats are.

Wrooster,

Another option would be to have a custom seat made, I had mine made MUCH softer than stock. I stopped by CORBIN and they made a custom seat for me in about 2 hours. I'm short, so I had them lower my seat about 3/4" and make it softer. Came out PERFECT, bit expensive bout $250 but it made all the differece in the world for me.

Wrooster,

You still complaining about those darn hard seats.
The other avenue is to toughn-up your back side. Get yourself a two-handed paddle and have your gal give you 10 good swats each night before bed.
:) Now if you do this don't blame me if she then gets a little frisky aferwards thats just one of the good side-effects other than the buns of steel you'll wind up with.

take care
