Hey fellas,

My buddy is having a problem with his YZ-450

the bike will start up perfect with the choke on.

turn the choke off and the bike will not idle, seems to bog under light throttle (pilot) but will stay running if you give it throttle.. just wont idle and seems to pop then die out

Sounds like the pilot jet and/or pilot circuit is restricted. Time for a carb cleaning.

I got it to idle playing with the idle screw under the choke.. is the air mixture screw located somewhere else? please forgive me i've only had PWK carbs.

the bike is still unresponsive/pops under light throttle

Turning the idle up is just by-passing the pilot circuit and its still going to run like crap.... now, go clean the carb.

642mx is right, and while you're at it, go with a 45/168 jet combo and put in a finger adjust air screw; I think mine is 1-3/4 turns out. Makes it into a new bike:banana:

I believe you guys. This bike is not mine

Just want to make sure the stock pilot screw is at factory settings, the bike is fully stock. can you tell me how to get to the pilot air screw? is it on the bottom?

The fuel screw is located on the front side of the bowl, under the carb. Its a real PITA to adjust without removing the carb or swapping out the stock fuel screw for an extended screw. Its not capped.

The WR is capped, not the YZ.

I talked to my friend, He said last time he was out riding it wasnt idling well.

Bike has been sitting for awhile and gas is a year old.

under 10 hours on it since 06, so yeah. the carb is CLOGGED.

I will be pulling the carb off and cleaning it for him, I come from 2-strokes & PWK's..

any tips for the FCR removal/installation/cleaning? any good write-ups online?

Year old gas? Forget it. It's a wonder that it even burns.

To ease carb removal, read this thread from here:
