I am getting a WR250f after I sell my bike and was wondering if the 2001 had electric start or not. Also, I have heard mostly good things about it, but have heard some stories about hard starting, is this true on a 2001?

a) neither the '01 YZF nor the '01 WRF have electric start.
ditto for the '02 models.
c) the '03 YZF does not have electric start, but the '03 WRF does. both have automatic compression release, unlike the earlier '01 and '02 models which sport a manual compression release mounted on the left side of the bars.
regarding starting with the foot lever, my '01 WRF lights up easily. maybe i just got a good egg -- and moreover i improved it greatly with just one 15 second tweak (fuel screw). others have had worse luck, and subsequently abandoned the 250F (same same for the 426F). hence the introduction of electric start on the WRF in 2003. and furthermore, yamaha added the automatic compression release to both of the '03 models, which further aids starting and relieves 4-stroke owners from learning a new starting drill.
ps:
i have two '01 250F's in my family, as my brother has a '01 YZF. both start very easily. nevertheless i got all caught up in the '03 cam swap hoopla and got one of those for myself to see what all the shouting is about. as soon as the snow is gone i'll tell you how it works. if you are impatient, you can run a search on "YZ CAM" (or some such) and listen in awe to the pleased masses here on TT.
so that's my unsolicited US$0.02 worth.
