Almost Street Legal in PA!!!

Well, Today i got the paperwork started on my street conversion. I took it to the
enhanced inspection mechanic a week ago and they wouldn't let the stock headlight pass
because its not DOT. It also need a clutch lever because the ball was broken off.
So today i got the headlight and lever and went back to the mechanic. I put the stuff on
and he gave me the paperwork to take to the notary. Because it had an ORV title, they
cannot process it online. It has to be done by hand. The notary said worst case it could
take up to 8 weeks to get my title. So we wait.

Here is what I did to get the bike street legal.

Front and rear brake light switches. (20$ for both on ebay)
2 Sets of suzuki bandit rear turn signals. (35$ on ebay)
Horn and signal relay from auto store. (17$)
R1 handle bar switches(20$ ebay)
DOT tires, Kenda (95$ for both, motorcyclesuperstore.com)
Rear taillight (35$ ebay)
Headlight (50$ oemcycle.com...Kawasaki green on clearance)
Trailtech Vapor (98$ ebay)
Reg/Rect (37$ baja designs)
12v4ah battery (got from work)
2 Mirrors (20$ ebay)
Mirror perches (22$ xrsonly.com, they replace the clamps and don't take up
and more space on the bars)
Blue LED light for hi beam indicator (Radio Shack)
2 Small green lights for turn signal indicator (Radio Shack)


None of the prices include shipping. Every light must say DOT on the lense. Must have blue
hi beam indicator. Must have both front and rear brake light switches. Must have 2 mirrors.
Must have a horn. Must have front and rear turn signals. Must have speedo and odometer.
Must have DOT tires. Must have a battery so lights can be on without bike running.

The enhanced inspection was $120.00 at Jax Cycles in Altoona, PA. (only one in area)
The notary fee was $60.50 at Notary and Copy Stop, inc. in Altoona, PA
You have to pay the taxes on all the parts you buy for the conversion. The notary takes
this money. Jax does all the paperwork and pictures, you pick it up and take it to the
notary, they do their thing. When i get the title in the mail, I'll take it back to the
notary and they will give me my plate and sticker. Then i have to go back to Jax for the
final inspection and inspection sticker. Also, you must have valid insurance for a bike,
whether its for this perticular bike or another. I had my card for 2 other bikes I have
and the notary said that was good enough. You will need to have all receipts for your parts.
The stuff i got on ebay I used paypal to pay for, so i just went back and printed all of
them out.

Hopefully, all i need to do is wait. From what another member on TT said, the receipts have
to say DOT on them. If that is the case, I may have just wasted a lot of money. Even
the DOT parts i bought from stores don't say DOT on the receipt. I guess we'll see. With all
parts, pieces, this and that, I think I have about $700.00 in this project.


I'll get some pics of the bike and a couple brackets i made when i can. I'll also let you
know when i get the plate.

You may have already read this on supermoto junkie. I'll get some pics of the bike now and when i finish it in advantage hardwood HD camo!!!!

The body camo is pretty much done. The black is herculiner. I plan to do the frame in that next winter. I call it my hunting bike. What do you think?

This is why our bikes is Australia cost so much more. They have all this stuff on them and are ready for rego. But its the only bikes that can be road registered here. Motocross bikes can never be legally registered. Good work by the way!

What kind of front brake switch did you use? Can you make a pic or a link to the ebay item you've bought?

The switch is the exact same thing you use for the rear brake. It replaces the banjo bolt. It has the same threads. Its 10x1.25 I THINK BUT AM NOT SURE!!!! As far as i know, the guy i bought these from just had a couple of them. I got both for less than the cost of one and they were still in the package.

I just moved back to Ohio from FL and told the title lady "I want it to say [COLOR="Red"]MC[/COLOR] where is says [COLOR="red"]OHV[/COLOR]!"
She said OK and I got a plate.

I have a 2000 YZ250 and bought what I need if I get stopped by the cops.

BTW I love the Camo. I always wanted to do that but never did.

Until i get my title and plate, i may just pull a plate off of one of my other bikes. I don't know if i can be patient for 8 weeks.
I've wanted to camo it for a while now. Actually, i was looking for camo plastic right after i bought it but couldn't find any. That was in 01. I just got it running again after sitting for a couple years. I still need to fine tune the carb, but its rideable. Right now its jetted for a stroker exhaust and an open airbox. I put the stock exhaust on for the inspection. I also have a turndown for the stock one i think i'm going to use instead of the stroker. Its too loud.

I got my plate today!!!!! I still have to go down for the final inspection, but the mechanic said its no big deal. Basically just put the sticker on. I would go do it now, but the weather is crappy and i have to pick up my daughter soon. Hopefully tomorrow. I'll post again when its 100%.

Yesterday I rode it down to JAX cycles and had the inspection done. I found 2 things out: I need to change the gearing, it doesn't like to go fast on the highway., and 2, it only takes about 10 miles to melt down the right rear signal that i mounted exactly not quite far enough out of the way of the exhaust. I discovered that as I got off the bike at the shop. I didn't loose the lense, so i just taped it back on with some electrical tape. As soon as I got home and it cooled down, I put my homemade turndown in the stock pipe and did a much better job attaching the lense with more electical tape. Hopefully, with the turndown, it won't be getting the heat as much.

BUT SHE'S FINALLY LEGAL!!!!!!
