   The rear is.  It's a Dunlop Elite.  It came on the wheel, and the dang thing is like new.......just can't bare to replace it! :excuseme:

   It's just for riding on the road anyhow.

Cool bike! And yes to answer your question. I'd not ridden dirt in many years and bought an old XR350 to tinker with and learn on. Well a couple of years later and complete motor rebuild including crank to Xr's only, powdercoating frame,swingarm, etc etc.  have 2 sets of oem wheels, 1 with street rubber. Rear is 17" OEM, so I need a front made at some point. It has all black plastic, Fastflexx bars, Baja designs dual sport kit. I have a CR front end I'm going to us on it and a gorgeous black (all Honda) brand new CRF wheel for it.

Going to be my dual purpose (for real) bike. Then I saw an ad for a really cheap 03 Xr400 and made the mistake of checking it out. REALLY clean, CLH(?) pipe, handguards, brake guards, etc and bought it.  :banana:

Soooo, I was going to put the goodies on the 400 and sell the 350. But I've got more in the motor than I'd get out of the whole bike. AND the 400 forks don't suck, sooo I'm thinking, sell the Super Hawk (tempts me to go to fast all the time), keep the 350 and make it a motard full time. The 6 speed tranny and long, slower steering frame make for a very stable dirt to street bike.  And the street use will doubtless be much easier on the old girl than wailing up hills.

Soooo, gold CR front end, maybe gold hub, black rim 17" for the front.  Powdercoat the rears.  hmmmmm  :worthy:

Below is a photo of my bike at Infineon Raceway's Supermoto track. I took a Supermoto class and had a blast. These handle pretty good with Supermoto tires on them.

Bump for an old thread, with an update.
My 1990 KDX240 has began the process
to SuperMoto conversion. It went under
the knife last weekend on the operating
table.

I picked up a complete wiring harness from a GasGas EC300 and
grafted most of it into the KDX's chassis. Converting the headlight
to a Hi/Lo beam and the rear tail light to be a running/brake light
set up.
Part of the plan is to install a Rectifier/Regulator for DC power and
add a battery. This is yet to be completed, gotta find space for the battery.
I did install an Acewell Speedometer gage package. It will have speed,
distance, RPM and water temp readouts. As well as turn indicators and
hi/lo headlight indicators.
Yesterday I ordered a new set of Excel Takasago rims in 3.50 front and
4.25 rear. (themanoy) I did not opt in for the gold rims like I said I might.
Instead I stuck with the silver rims. I did pick up a set of Michelin Race
tires, 120/60-17 and 150/60-17 to go with them.
There still is quite a bit to do before completion.
My digital camera took a dump a few weeks ago. I will post up some
new pictures when I can. Might be a couple of months.
Wish me luck....I may need to win the lottery to be able to afford this
one.

The body work is "box stock" Kawasaki plastic.
The tank is the original 1990 tank. I would like
a new one, but, the last time I checked with
Kawasaki they had 9 left in the USA and wanted
something like $350 for one. That was 4-5 years ago.
The after market stuff is the Acerbis guards, FMF pipe
and a Carbon Fiber pipe gurad. MSR fanny pack and
EBC brake rotors. Moose skid plate and some DEVOL
guards here and there.
It was a frame up restoration from maybe 3 years ago.
Two part Epoxy paint on the frame and swing arm.
And a new Weisco 240cc piston kit. It has not been
started or had gas in the tank since the restoration.
It does have oil in the trans and coolant in the system.
The big $$s were spent at RaceTech. The suspension
got their full treatment with gold valves and new everything.
It should ride pretty nice when it is finished.
I will post an update when I can get some new picts.

Time for another thread jack. Damn I've got to stop doing that :banana:
Some progress has been made on the poor man KDX240SM conversion.
I installed the new wheels and gearing last night.

Everything fit like a charm, except, I had to loose the chain guard. With the
150/60-17 rear tire there just was not any room.
I still have a ways to go with the electronics before a test ride. Mount and
connect a battery and the rectifier/regulator wiring...etc..
Got the new Speedo installed too.

Noobie question here... I have an old XL600R sitting in the garage, bare stock.  What's involved in putting on a set of 17" rims?  I know its rims/tires/brakes, but how do you go about figuring what's needed as far as axle spacers, blocks for the calipers, etc?  Also how do you handle a bike with a drum rear brake?

I've ridden it for the past 22 years and have thought off and on about giving it a second life, but want to do it on the cheap (if possible) and not get something started that becomes a headache or dead end.

A lot of folks here have done XR/XL600 and 350R motard conversions.
I did an XL350R, (see page 6 of this thread) it is NOT cheap.  I kept the
brake. spacer & Axle issues to a minimum by using my stock wheel
hubs and laced them to 17" rims.
Search the archives here and supermotojunkie.com for tons of info
and ideas on converting your XR600R. Your bank account will place
the limit on what you can do. Expect to pay +$1,000 USD for just
the wheel set up. Unless you get used rims and can lace & true
your own wheels.
For me, it was worth every penny. I love how my XL350SMR rides.

If you use OEM or after market hubs FOR an XL600 to have the wheels built, then the stock wheel spacers will work. Same with the caliper. NOthing different.

Nothing wrong with drum rear brakes. Keep it clean and adjusted properly. With weight shift forward under braking (excessive weight shift on softly sprung dual sport bikes with fairly long suspension travel) there is VERY little effective braking done with the rear wheel.  IF you really want to change it you'll have to swap the swingarm out and replace the rear end stuff too.

WHY?

Dirt to street - to get the light weight and easy handling feel of a dirt bike on the road. to be able to ride your dirt bike to and from trails or on road sections of trails.
Road to street - to uhhhh,  ummmmmm  huh.   :thumbsup:

My 85 Suzuki SP600. Picked up a running, titled bike for $500. Could have gone a LOT cheaper route, but I put it on a diet, and opted for some top shelf stuff. Total when done will be around $2300-2500.
