Fork Guards on 02 426....

I searched and couldn't find an answer on these questions:

A bolt came out of my fork guard yesterday and long story short the guard came out of the guide causing it to break the fork guard. I was wondering if I can replace them with the newer style that lacks the guide? I noticed while replacing the fork seals, when the forks are fully decompressed the guards come out of the guides (they are still lined up with the guides) and I fear if I buy a new set this will just happen again. The reason I ask, my buddy used to have a 426 and when I showed him what happened he said it was common and he used to break them all the time....

Is it really a common occurrence or was it simply due to the bolt that fell out?

Not common.
