So disappointed in 2008 450

Recommended Posts

I can't believe I would ever say this of a 450 but the 08 motor is weak. It's the most boring motor I've ever rode. It had the feel of a 125 (all top end) I never needed more then my 05 crf450 could give and I loved the spread of power. I ride the desert in Utah and I found myself having to shift a ton on the yz. The whole bike felt so vanilla:banghead: . The suspension was a tragedy but thats due to the clickers. I'm thinking of selling or trading and getting a kx. What do you guys think? can you pump character into this bike cheaply? or should I just get the kawi? also what clicker settings do you run? i'm fast amatuer 175lbs desert. Thanks guys

well thats a first..

The stock muffler sucks and mellows down the motor alot. get an aftermarket exhaust that will open things up a bit.

suspension.. shouldnt be a problem cause the kyb sss setup is one of the best factory setups but its set up for mx.. what exactly is it doing that u dont like? is it to hard? to soft? need more info..

the exhaust should do it.. if it dosnt u can always add a cam or hc pistion..

I suspect it is not much as down on power but the lack of 'kick' at lower rpms. Many percieve an engine with a nice, smooth hp/torque curve to be weak. You can make a few mods to 'interrupt' the smooth flow of power which in turn will make it feel faster. If you can, go for a timed ride on your bike, then on a different brand. Which was faster? Which one tired you out more?

The engine comment I can understand, but the suspension complaint? That just doesn't make sense. It's been called one of the best, if not the best suspension out of production bikes, and I have to say that it is VERY good. I'm 185lbs, not the fastest around, but I can push it hard. 2 clicks on the suspension and I'm the happiest one around with the suspension, stock. Maybe this guy is used to ride bikes with top of the line factory suspension.:ride:?

Like the others said, change the exhaust, even just a slip-on or a stock muffler from an 06 bike, that will fix the power curve instantly. And the suspension..... well, if you think the kx will have better suspension, think again.

I ride an 08 450 in the utah desert & as much single track as I can get. This is the best bike I have ever had for this area. I shift less than on my KTM and can ride ALOT longer. When I want more power I just twist my right hand more....

yep, that's right. I have an 08 as well, it's only got a Dr.D exhaust as far as performance mods go. It has tremendous pulling power, I mostly leave it in 2nd/3rd gear and take it from there with the throttle.

I want to ride the 125 he's talking about!

That would be nice, a 125 that pulls as hard as the 450 on top, where can I buy one?

Finally got to ride my 08 450.My 450 rips! I have it geared 13/50 and have an exhaust. I can't believe the power, and this is my first 4 stroke and 450. It is almost as much power as a CR500 that I used to race. I have to slow down for the corners soon after the bike lights up! I have not even been on a track yet, just riding it in a small field at my barn. This bike is amazingly fast, I was a B rider and its enough for me. I never rode it with the stock pipe and gearing. Was it that bad?

my bike is bone stock atm, and I really don't feel I need a pipe. I was just going to bolt on a spark arrester for Ca and call it good. plenty of bike. and I can't even out-ride it stock, so why would I want anything else...

I bought the bike from a 230 pounder way out in beryl Ut (5 hours one way). I got it back to my house at 4:30 a.m. then went riding at 8:30. I didn't set the sag or adjust the clickers that's why I was bitching about the suspension. my 05 has revalved suspension and a pipe. It pulls forever, I love the powerband. The yamaha felt light though, really easy to throw around. I loved my honda because I could ride the bike a gear high, the yamaha wants to rev and the bottom end is soft so I was shifting more. Will just a slip on give the bike more snap? or do I need the headpipe also? do the aftermarket pipes stick out way past the side panel?

yes.. they stick out past the side panels. some more then others..

for the price of a slip on u can get almost get a full system custom made by MRDracing.. lifetime warrenty and just tell him you want more bottom and he will give u a pipe that will give u more bottom..

the suspension is going to be way still and u will need to get new springs and a revalve if he did that before he sold it or u wont ever be happy..
