I'm still reading FI problems, one guy just got the stalling after 5,ooo miles with none so original setup seems a weak theory for all of them. I've heard/seen it develope & get worse with miles.:worthy:

I really want to like this bike, a 690r is catching my eye at the shop but I think I'll regret it with the complications of the FI. Another report of disconnected throttle where the engine runs late off the twist and roaming/floating idle causing runaway bike syndrome on downhills would pess me off to no end.

Any updates or higher milage reports? Thanks!

I've got 7500 miles on my 08 Enduro now.My stalling issue has been fixed one way. Got the updated Akra map in it for about 1000 miles and now it only stalls when it first starts up and the engines cold. Takes about 2 or 3 tries before it will idle. After that it's good till it sits for a couple hours and cools off. This I can live with, just a minor annoyance. No wandering idle or runaway idle after it gets up to operating temp.

I had the same problem and it has been fixed by adjusting the spark arrestor so it gives slightly more back pressure. You can check this on start up with a gloved hand over the exh exit.

...I would suggest that the 690 is obviously sensitive to exhaust backpressure, so given the stock fuel mapping (which im sure is US emmissions sensitive) all the aftermarket pipe swapping is a risk. Are you guys running good fuel? Have you all tried the throttle position/range reset? Have you done the 15 min idle? Have you done the 2/3 gear wire clip mod?(more fuel delivered) I am running my 2008 Duke 690 on dial map #2 (sport), have done all of the above, and have not had any stalling on that position (I think you get more fuel overall). I did experience an occasional stall on Position #3 (general use), but it was only during high temp months, clutch in blipping, or on a pullaway with too little throttle. I also run an ounce of Stabil Fuel stabilizer through every full tank just to keep the injectors clean and the fuel quality up. I dunno, it seems that the more you mess with the bike's exhaust, the more trouble you get for very little performance gains.

I'll see if I can play around with the one in the LV pipe on mine. It already has a dB reducer insert in the pipe which supposedly should provide enough back pressure to prevent the stalling but it's not helping in mine.

I use premium tier 1 gas so I know fuel isn't the issue. Done the gear indicator clip. Done the reset procedure more times then I care to admit. I always use position 2. As I said, it only stalls when I first start it up so I can live with that.

Albi, were you fighting the original stalling problem, why the reset drills so often?

excuse my ignorance,...

can someone describe into detail the different procedures for the 15min reset test and any other that might help resolve this...

thanks in advance
macutan

PS: I mean, I didn't have this issue before I brought it in for the service,... so it must have been something they have done to the moto while there (they did do a change oil...)

Yup, after I went to the LV slip on I developed the stalling problem. Loaded the first akra map and that worked for a while but then it started stalling again. Loaded the new version of the Akra map and that's where I'm at now. Like I said, I can live with the bike stalling a couple times when I first start it up. The other stalling issue was dangerous.

Disconnect the battery, turn on the ignition to make sure no residual votage in the system. Turn off ignition, reconnect battery. Start the bike and let it idle for 15 minutes.

The THAD and APAD sensors on your throttle body most likely need to be adjusted. I know adjusting my APAD sensor can bring about this exact behavior. The sensors have a very narrow adjustment range of only +/- .02V.

Ahh, the bike's at the dealer right now getting a wire harness replaced and a new gauge cluster. I'll get em to check those sensors.

It sounds like, & this is crazy but, that the tune gets washed out over time. More have been fine & had the stalling develop for seemingly no reason as I've read it. Too much tech.

I've read somewhere that KTM has a throttle body setup procedure that adjusts those two sensors. Maybe mention that when you give them a call.

thanks Albie for your response.

are the battery connectors easily reachable? i am traveling at the moment and i do not know if their location is marked in the manual.

Thanks once again

Yup, just pull off the seat, two bolts hold a battery cover that have to be removed then slide the cover back top expose the terminal, then just disconnect the positive lead.

So my questinn is this. Is there any way you can fine tune the mapping say with a program, port cable & laptop like the Honda 450R or are you just stuck with preprogramed maps to install & hope for the best?

I was set to start shopping for a KTM 690 in September but this stalling issue is a drag. I had an 05 Triumph Rocket III and Yamaha XV1700 Warrior that had a stalling problems at certain times. I sold both at a lost. Dealers could not find the problem. Internet showed lots of other owners having the same problem. Years later I get a letter from the factory for a recall. This kind of problem can get you killed or worst?

I have not experienced the FI problem yet, I have put on 1450 mile on my 09 690 R, The few time it has stalled was when I was taking off from a stop. I hope that was my fault. Great to read about things like this so I don't freak out if it happens. Thanks all

Mine has been particularly ornery as of late. When using short, quick revs to pull away, it almost always stalls. If I just do the "one smooth throttle / clutch motion" pull away, it's usually ok. Highly annoying.
