'08 YZF 450 Shifting Question

Recommended Posts

These bikes have something called a clutch Teach him how to use it:bonk:

It beats the heck out of me why people shift without the clutch. I don't care how well you sync unloading the engine/shifting, it only takes a moment to disengage the motor from the tranny with the clutch. Your tranny will thank you for it down the line.

Rant over:busted:

No kidding....It has a clutch?

If your poking along smelling the wild flowers, using the clutch is fine.

When your ripping on the track, many riders are shifting without it. Did ja know??

Even while useing the clutch, he is sometime getting a false netral.

I know that on my early model WR 250f, this was also a symptom.

the fix was stiffer clutch springs or add a small washer on the end of the spring where it contacted the pressure plate(see free mods)

Is there such a fix for the '08?

Anyone else have a reasonable suggestion?

Thanks:ride:

My son has a new '08. He says that it is hard to shift. He also said that his '08 YZ 250 t-stroke is the same way. Is this typical to Yamaha trannies, and is there something you have done to fix it.

Thanks for the help.?

No sure where everyone above my post say that your son doesnt use the clutch...?

but to answer your question, both my 06 and 08 were "hard" to shift when new but once they are broke-in they shift like butter ?

Absolutely knew that. It's still my opinion that using the clutch is easier on the tranny and you don't really gain anything by not using it.

I haven't read anything on either the YZ or WR side indicating a systemic problem with the 08 tranny. Like the above poster suggested, give it time and it should loosen up.

Oh, and use the clutch:smirk: ?
