high rpm - whats wrong?

my friends wr400 1998 started today to rev on high rpm. its not the chock or cold start cause they r still working well and the throttle cables r fine. its not only high rpm, but the bike sounds like s__t.what could b the problem?

Possible air leak,
Check for cracks and the clamps on boot between the carb & cylinder.

I have heard that the 400 has problem with the carb slide cracking...

I had a similar problem on my old XR600....bike would miss at real high rpm.... stator was bad in my case.
