Stock Computer/Odometer on newer WRs

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for some info on the stock odometers/computers that come on the new WRs.

What year did they introduce this on the WR250/450? I was told they started coming with them the year they added the aluminum frames to the WR line which would be 07.

Have they changed the features of the odo/computer at all since they introduced them?

Do they have a built in Hour Meter like the stock KTM ones do?

Thanks for the help,

Nathan

It's not a very good computer and I'd ditch it in favor of a Vapor ASAP. Benefits include an odometer that actually keeps track of your cumulative mileage, hour meter that starts counting when the engine is running, re-setable trip meter that you can increment and decrement for dual-sport/enduro events, coolant temperature, ambient temperature (not accurate due to the sensor location) and tach to name a few. Also, if your riding includes any amount of bush-whacking, then that ugly-ass stock odo cable sticking out on the right side is just asking to get ripped off. The Vapor eliminates this.

SXP

I am going to disagree with you (respectfully that is? ) that the stock unit is a good computer in the way it was designed to be used…i.e.…keeps time, tracks miles/km and speed. It does not have all the bells and whistles like a Vapor but functionally it works just fine!

For anyone who wants a tac, hour meter, temp and all that stuff then by all means SXP is correct in saying that the VAPOR has more to offer.

Fair enough, BUT my a$$-hole is better than yours:lol: (you know, that opinion thing....)

Joking aside, I'd have lived with the stocker IF it would keep track of cumulative miles. For me, that was the deal clincher in favor of the Vapor.

Thanks for all the info guys! Mostly I was wondering when they introduced them and if they had an hour meter function or not. It sounds like they introduced them in 06 on the 450 and 07 on the 250.

I've had requests to build hour meter mounts for the WRs and I just wanted to make sure they didn't already have an hour meter stock. You would be surprised what people ask for and I wouldn't have been shocked to find the bikes already have hour meters and people just didn't realize it...... Like when people ask me why I don't build the air filter bolts for KTMs

Looks like I will go ahead and make a batch of WR meter mounts.

Thanks again,

Nathan Palm (NaPalm Racing)

Sorry to say I am also a stock odo/computer fan  lol, Here in the UK the stock computer does keep a non resetable mileage counter like on a car, as well as resetable trip A & B, laps etc.

Production mounts should be ready to go in about 2 weeks. I just finished making a new prototype mount with a far forward offset to fit the 09 KX250F and it also happens to fit perfect on the WR250/450s.

There is one more bike that I was hoping to adapt this same mount to but I will not have access to the bike until next week so that is the only reason for the hold up on getting the first batch into the CNC. If I'm going to introduce a second style of mount I want to make sure I've adapted it to as many models as possible.

Where are you planning on making it mount

Oops, I didn't read your question well enough..... I thought you asked when am I making it rather than where am I making it mount

It will mount on the front gas tank mounting bolt just like my current meter mounts. It just has a more forward offset to get the meter out away from the WR's larger tank.

cool...have you though about mounting it where the smog pump used to be...i mean (not that any body would remove the smog pump:busted: )

Not a prob at all! Just don't reset the "A" computer. I wish it went out 5 digits instead of three but it works well enough for me. I use the "B" computer to track ride miles.

I already have 2600 miles on the bike. Your way I'd have to keep track of how many times the A screen had "gone around" and zeroed itself  And, I can just see myself accidently re-setting it.

Anyway, it's a preference thing....

I have not thought of that...... I was just trying to keep it in a very visible location and stick to the same theme of where I placed the mounts on the motocross bikes. That way you can use it as a ride timer plus it is pretty protected in that area and it is awful hard to forget maintenance when your hours are staring you in the face.

There has been very little demand for the meter mounts on WRs (probably due to them having the Odometer already) so I will probably just stick with the tank bolt location since the one I built for the KX250F fits the WRs.

The Odometer is a decent way of tracking maintenance but I think the hour meter is a step above considering 1 mile on tight trails could be 15 minutes while 1 mile on fire roads could be 90 seconds of run time.
