My custom airbox arrived (some assembly required)

Posted Image

I cut the pieces to match the cardboard prototype I made.

Posted Image

To get the width I wanted I had to order kind of thick aluminum.  I had a friend machine some slots in the larger pieces to lighten them up.

Hope it's big enough

Thanks.  Some of the welds were a real chore.  I'm glad it looks decent.

If you can fit 2L or more inside, then it's big enough. :smirk: It's getting pressurized by the turbo, right?

Yup.  2 liters shouldn't be a problem.  I'll fill it with Mountain Dew tomorrow to check.

Turbocharging a machine from scratch is a huge time consuming, and very expensive job. I turbocharged my zx14 with a ready-made bolt-on kit, and it was still a big undertaking. I'm guessing he might have lost interest and moved on to another project.

I’m sorry this project has been on hiatus for so long.  I was never convinced of the health of the T14 turbo I originally planned to put in this bike.  I was also worried that it was too big for the application.  When people started commenting on the incorrect placement of the turbo the project really stalled out.  I had a LOT of time invested in this build and I really didn’t want to reroute the pipes just to change the turbo placement, so the NX went on the back porch while I thought about what to do.  It’s sat there for, what… a year and a half?  That’s been a long enough time for me to forget about all the work I’ve put into the current setup and realize that it needs to be redone, and I need the right turbo.  So I saved my pennies and finally bought a GT1241 turbo.

Posted Image

The GT1241 is the smallest turbo Garrett makes and it is not easy to find.  I could not find a used or rebuilt one.  I had to buy it new, which means it cost more than I originally paid for the bike.

I'd like to say I'm going to jump right on this project, but unfortunately I have to rebuild a couple bikes before a Moab trip in a few weeks, plus I already have two other projects sitting in the shop (but one's almost done and the other won't get in the way too much).  So anyway, look for updates in about three weeks.
