what would cause my bike to become increasingly difficult to start? This seemed to happen in one day. it seemed difficult to kick, then it just doesn't want to start.

Do a check on your cam timing. It may have jumped a tooth due to a failed chain or a cam seizure.

Once you verify the timing be sure to check the valve clearance.

I would first check the plug and make sure it wasnt fouled, But of course I always take the the easy route first
