I bought a '01 DR 650 SE about 3 months ago and these are the mods that have worked best for me. My bike now runs and handles WAY better than stock.

CARB     170 main
         45 pilot
         fuel screw 1 turn out
stock needle with 2 thin shims
         stock nozzle
         increase float level 2mm
         choke disabled - not needed

AIR BOX  -  Use a utility knife with a new blade, and carefully cut open the entire top of the air box, leaving 1/2" material around the top bolt mounting locations. Extend the cuts down both sides of the air box at least 1". These extended open slots on both sides of the box will draw cool air directly from the side panel air slots. The front vertical section of the air box that is closest to the engine should remain uncut to block hot air from entering the box. Remove the back fire screen, and install a Moose air filter, which is larger than stock for better filtering and more airflow. Service the Moose filter just like a motocross bike's air filter.

EXHAUST  Super Trapp "Quiet Series" muffler with 8 discs - 91db

IGNITION  Install NGK CR9E spark plugs

FORKS   Eibach .47kg springs - Bel Ray HVI 15wt. racing fluid 600cc in each tube - damper rod top out springs cut in half to increase travel by 3/4" - preload spacer cut to top of tube at full extension

SHOCK  Eibach 7.1kg spring with adapters at top and bottom
preload  -  3" of rider sag
Bel Ray HVI 15wt. racing fluid
                nitrogen pressure 142 psi
compression adjuster set at 4 out

GEARING  14 tooth counter sprocket - remove stock o-ring and grind 1/8" from outside of sprocket keeper to prevent contact with chain

TIRES  Maxxis M6006 50/50 tread  20 psi front    22 psi rear

GOODIES  Utah Cycle woods skid plate, Renthal bars, Scott grips
