cheap horsepower for 06 yz450

Recommended Posts

The '06 has an awesome motor....smooth, linear, and powerful. I can't think of any inexpensive way to improve it other than making sure you are jetted correctly.

In all my time on my '06 I can think of only one instance where I wanted more HP and that was in a race that had a 1/2 mile long silt bed that was 5th gear WOT...but I was running 14/48 gearing. With stock gearing it would have been fine.

What is your definition of cheap? I spent $200 on a 13.5:1 CP piston, installed it myself so no labor costs. I couldn't believe the improvement. I also spent $100 on the Zip-Ty carb mod at the same time, but I think the majority of the power gains are due to the piston. This bike is incredibly fast now.

Question, Does your engine run good on 91 octane with 13.5:1 CP piston?

I have only run about 5 tanks of gas through it since I put in the piston. The first 4 were 100 octane just to be safe, but everyone has told me that I should be fine with 91. So I ran a full tank of 91 on a 4-hour ride a few days ago, and I didn't notice any difference. It ran great on 91. The low-end power increases are very impressive. I forgot to add the cost of new gaskets; another $30 or so...

In answer to the other question, the zip-ty carb mod involved pulling the carb out and sending it in to zip-ty racing. They do some modification to it to sharpen the throttle response and remove the low-end bog. There is a lot of discussion about it here on the forum.

I done the 1/4 turn throttle mod to mine and it only costed me about $2.50 and that was for only the glue and pvc coupler.

With this mod it tricks your brain thinking you gave your bike more horse power but in reality your just not having to bring the throttle all the way back to get it to WOT!!! ... just a quarter turn.

I did the "1/4 turn throttle mod" to my '08 WR450F this afternoon.

Instead of using PVC pipe I turned up a 3mm thick spacer from nylon stock and cut it to fit.

Not sure about the YZ, but the '08 WR needs to have it's throttle cables modified for this to work. I had to trim 5mm off the end of each outer, ie. the tip of the bent plastic guide. Without this the enlarged section of the throttle won't slip past end of the cable outers.

Took it for a run on the road (it's currently in motard form) and I must say I was impressed with the feel of it. The bike felt faster.

I'm due to go trail riding next weekend on it, can't wait to see how it goes/feels in the dirt!
