Mine did the same thing. It was really bad after sitting for a few months. After screwing around with it and trying to make sure the O rings were clean I finally gave up. I picked up a new complete petcock assembly at the dealer for about 20 bucks. I should have done this sooner but I figured it would have been more expensive.

There is a 3AJ-24534-00-00 seal, and a 3AJ-24523-00-00 valve packing. About 90% of the time, replacing these fails to reseal the petcock. Just replace the whole thing and save yourself some trouble.

You can also replace it with a WR petcock and you will have a reserve position.

I bought a rebuild kit for like $12. I forget the name of the company, but it came out of parts unlimeted... same company that makes a lot of carb rebuild kits. Blue cardboard backing for the envelope.

Worked fine for me. MIne wasnt leaking out around it though, it just would not turn off all the way

My Yamaha dealer sold me the O-ring, and it was simple and cheap to replace. No big deal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yamaha carries the "O" ring and the seal. You will have problems if you try to make something work cause it won't. Only a couple of bucks. Try this site you should be able to find your bike and the parts breakdown.
