Help me get this thing started!

Guys,

I purchased my '03 YZ450F last summer. Rode it a number of times and put it away in early Sept. I drained the gas from the tank at that time. This past weekend I went down, put in some gas and started cranking.

Nothing.

It has always started on the 3rd or 4th kick with the choke, but now it just doesn't seem to even want to try. After kicking myself to exhaustion I thought I might ask if there is anything I may be missing. I mean I've started the thing before so I'm not sure what it would be.

Did draining the gas cause a problem? :bonk:

There are a few things to check.
Do you have spark? Is the plug wet (getting fuel)? Is the plug fouled?

I know that many don't think that 4 strokes can foul a plug, but they can and do. Try putting in a new plug just the same.

What is the temp where the bike is kept? If it is getting pretty cold, you may have to change your starting sequence.

No, didn't drain the carb, just the gas tank. How would that be an issue??

If it was only sitting for a few days, that probably wouldn't cause an issue.

However, if it sat for any length of time (you said about 2 1/2 months), it is very possible that the gas left in the carb has turned to varnish and is plugging things up.

Made the mistake on my 426 of leaving gas in the carb for a few months (broken ribs in early Sept) and couldn't get the bike to start a couple of weeks ago.:bonk:

Realized my mistake, cleaned the carb, and the beast is back!:bonk:

Not necessarily. It would be a good idea to take it off but you may be able to just take the bowl off and pull the jets from there. if that doesnt work, then take the entire carb off.

Before you go nuts tearing apart your bike, try a new spark plug.........

Sometimes the carb. can be rotated while still on the manifold by loosening the clamps. When rotated the float bowl is easier to access.

My bike has a bear of a time starting until it is warm, I am still working the kinks out of my carb though before I re-jet. Have you tried taking the filter off and shooting a little ether or gas in there? its easier than taking the plug out and will let you know where your problem lies. just my .02
