There is cell reception in some parts. Mostly on the top of the hills.

I haven't ridden the new trails since July, but they are ok. I'm sure they are pretty beat up by now. But when I rode them, they were some of the better trails in the place.

Nick, to get good cell reception, go up the steep hill next to the MX track (I think it's called twin hill?) At top of hill, stay on the trail that goes up, keep going up until you reach a clearing with a picnic table under a tree. We use our phones here every time we camp. The Renz trails were fun, maybe just because they were new to me. If I were you I'd do all the black diamonds in Renz as well as troll trail if you haven't done that yet. Scott

Have gotten reception on most of Ranch Road(?) that runs along the northern permiter. Its the green trail that runs along the fence line.

A good friend of mine broke both of his wrists on that road and we had 3 bars when we called the ranger station. We also maintaned a call while driving back down the road in thetruck. Its was good almost the whole way until we dropped down to teh staging areas.

You can also get reception in pretty much all of the new sections that overlook the valley on the Renz(?) Property.

Oh almost forget.

The new trails suck. You should stay far awy from them. I wouldn't even bother checking them out.

I'll be at Hollister this weekend! Haven't been there in over 3 years! Also heading to Metcalf.

My question is... anyone know of a decent hotel that is pretty close to the park? And should the bikes be fairly safe locked in the back of the truck while backed up to something to keep them secure?

Most people camp in the park.
If you want a Hotel the closest thing is in the town of hollister, 10 or 15 minutes outside of the park.

Those last 2 weekends we had some rain they were turning people away from the gate by 10am cause the park was at capacity....

I also saw a nasty collision between riders on crossing trails one of those busy weekends. They were both hurt. Be extra careful when its crowded.

I think Renz trails are awesome... not that torn up right now either. My favorite is Windmill Maze. Not everyone likes them though.. most of the single track is is very narrow, maybe a foot wide. Like riding a mountain bike trail. mostly 2nd gear stuff, no big berms, and no big jumps, but plenty of small jumps if you find them.

I have gotten cell reception at radio ridge before, but its spotty... The park is so small that I dont bring anything with me when I am riding... About the furthest you can get from your parking spot is 10 minutes.

Good point. They sound awfully technical. I better stay away cause I don't
want to hit anything too difficult. :moon:

There is a RACE at Hollister this weekend at the upper ranch.

It is likely to be crazy crowded. I would think if you didn't get there Friday to get a camp site you would likely be screwed as well.

We stay at the Hollister Inn. Not a 5 star place but it is ok. Its right across the street from the McDonalds. If you stay there, it has two story rooms on one side and single rooms on the other. We always get a room on the single side. You can back you truck right up to your door so you can hear if anyone farts around with you bikes. Never had a problem there though. I always cain my bikes just in case.

We are not camping... and we will be riding there on Sunday, not Saturday. We would normally camp, but we aren't going to get the RV out of storage and deal with everything that comes along with using it this weekend.

I assume I could look at the site for info, but do you know if the race is going to be held on Saturday or Sunday? That would probably make a big difference in our planning if its going to be on Saturday.

And does the 'upper ranch' consist of just trails? We are more interested in just riding the tracks and putting around on the trails.. nothing major.

Try the Cinderella Inn in Hollister. It is real close to Hollister Inn mentioned above. It isn't the nicest of hotels, kinda small, but they are BIKE friendly and you will have no problems with stuff in parking lot. What is kinda cool about the rooms is they all have a theme. Oh and they heat the pool on the weekends. 70 bucks a night give or take as I recall.

Stayed at the Hollister Inn Saturday night. Stayed on the 1 story side of the hotel as advised and It was perfect. Backed the truck right up to the window so we could keep an eye on them. Plus there is a wall that blocks viewing of that side of the parking lot. Not the greatest... but cheap. The new hotel down the street wanted about $120 a night!

I have to say... there isn't crap for good food in Hollister. Or at least we didn't find any. We went to the pizza place across from the hotel in a shopping center. Pizza sucked and I think I was the only blonde haired person in the entire place..... 4 flippin kid bday parties going on while we were there. INSANE!

Hollister riding on Sunday was a blast though. Can't wait to go back. :) That hill climb is great! I think I was the only girl charging it..haha.
