Howdy all!

Recommended Posts

I've been viewing this site for years, so I'm not exactly new, but this is my first post. Anyhow, I just got a great deal on a brand new 2007 WR450F, so I thought I would finally join. I've had many bikes in my years from a XR100 to KDX220, KTM400, KTM300, TRX450R, KTM525,Raptor 700R, and now the latest edition, WR450F. I love this bike, it is so nimble compared to the other bikes I've had. It feels more like a motocross bike than any other! Love it! I'm still waiting on all my parts to come in to fully uncork this beast. Look forward to being part of Thumper Talk.

Thanks for looking!

Welcome Ranger! I have an '05 450 and I have a question for you since you have also had KTM's. I have a friend that has a 525, I think an '05 or '06, not sure which model, but it has the e button, and he would not say one good thing about the WR if he was on his death bed. He has no desire to ride my bike to compare it to his, even after all of the mod's I've done to it. How do you compare the KTM to the WR's.

Rest assure you have a great bike my friend. My KTM's have been awesome bikes, but this WR feels more like a motocross bike than any of them. It feels really nimble and light compared to the KTM. You can really flick this think around like its nothing in the rough stuff. I wasn't expecting that myself because I thought KTM was the best. Can't say a whole lot on the power yet because I haven't uncorked it(stuff is on its way though), but my girl has a YFZ450 and I've done the simple 3 mods on it and its a powerhouse. The 525 always seemed slow revving to me, the WR/YZ/YFZ engines really rev up quick. The 525 had nice power and torque but it wasn't a monster by any means. I liked the power on my 300EXC better, mostly because it's that 2-stroke power. That was a realllly fun bike. Over-all I like it the most out of all three of my KTMs. I can already tell the WR is going to be a more fun bike to ride after a few simple power mods. As far as the suspension goes, it is really kind of equal to the KTM for stock suspension. Right now, my raptor 700 is currently the powerhouse in my garage ?

Thanks for the info ranger. I know my bike is three years old, but I love the way its running now with everything I've done to it, it makes me giggle everytime I ride it. I've always heard good things about the KTM 300, but have always felt that the WR has been under rated by the magazines when comparing it to the four stroke KTM's and Honda X. Have fun with your WR and be careful on that quad. Wow, 700cc's in a quad. I hope you have AFLAC!!!!

Ranger, let us know what mod(s) you have on the way. I hope the JD jet kit is one of them. I bent my factory pipe. It had the can mod. My friend gave me his, like new, stock YZ250F pipe. This seemed to be a big improvement over the modified WR pipe.

The YZ250F mid-pipe is a bigger diameter than the WR450F pipe and the can is a little shorter. I had to use the WR mid-pipe gasket/dounut to make it work, everything else bolted right up. I also used a promoto billet end cap for a spark arrestor. With the YZ250F pip, the bike breathes better but now runs a little lean. Looks like I'll be breaking into the JD kit to richen her up just a little.

If you find a good deal on a YZ250F can go for it. You will not need the YZ header pipe, it's smaller than the WR header pipe.

I'm not sure how well a YZ450F pipe will work but I can testify that the free YZ250F pipe was a sweat mod for me. Once polished and fitted with the billet end cap it lookes like a high dollor aftermarket pipe.

What model year 250 pipe works?

Post up a couple of pics:thumbsup:

I have the AIS removal kit, JD Jet Kit, JD mixture screw, DRD Full System, and a Twin-Air air filter coming. Still have to unplug the grey wire but figured I would wait on the AIS removal kit to get here so I can get rid of that crazy throttle stop to actually feel the power. I'm installing soft Guts seat foam this evening with a new seat cover and I also have a M59 Bridgestone tire to throw on the front. I've had DRD pipes before and they're great pipes, not to loud and nice and powerful throughout the range. Thanks for the ideas!

The 525 always seemed slow revving to me, the WR/YZ/YFZ engines really rev up quick.

This is precisely the reason some prefer the KTMs. In tight, technical terrain, the KTM motor is easier to manage. Out in the open, the WR revs quicker and thus most people like it there. I still prefer the suspension on my WR450 over the KTMs I have ridden, but the KTM motor is perfect for East coast conditions, where my WR revs too quickly and requires lots of clutch use.

I'm not sure about that, I think this bike is just as luggable as my 525 was. Although I haven't ridden the WR enough to give you a complete evaluation but I did throw it in some pretty nasty stuff just to see what it will do and it would lug just like my KTMs if not better, and thats a stock machine. While the flywheel weight is comparable, the stroke on the KTM is like 10mm longer making it rev a little slower. Plus the 5 valve DOHC on the WR is just an engine that loves to rev up quick. Combine it with a heavier flywheel and wide-ratio transmission and you have a bike that likes to rev and lug great at the same time. I grew up in North Carolina, so I know what the east has to offer too, some of the roughest trails I've been on, lol. When I had the 525 everyone thought I was crazy, said it would be a handful in the woods, which was exactly the opposite, I thought it was indeed great in the nasty stuff. Never thought it was a handful or had mind blowing power, it was an awesome trail bike that was just at home trail riding as it was racing. The bike could be a baby if you wanted it too, or be a beast. My 300 two-stroke wouldn't lug quite as good, but it was still more fun to ride however. ? So yeah the WR has a lot to live up to compared to my KTMs, but so far first impressions are really great and I'm liking it better already!

not to highjack your post Ranger but SXP asked for a little info on the YZ pipe for the WR.

I used the can off a 06' YZ250F. The gasket/dounut that was left inside of the YZ mid pipe was too small to use on the WR, due to the smaller YZ250 header. I had to put the WR gasket/dounut into the YZ mid pipe to make it work. I mesured both mid pipes, the YZ250F was a little larger than the WR's and the can from the YZ was a little shorter 13" vs 15 3/4".

Thanks for the PM with the info. It's good to know there are alternatives out there. I/m currently using an 07 YZ450 pipe on my WR with the same blue PMB end cap. It looks just like your setup and looks cool, but I doubt my setup would pass sound tests. Thanks again.
