Everything I have read about painting plastic fuel tanks says don't do it. I guess that fuel moves through the plastic enough that it causes problems for the paint, but I could be wrong. :bonk:

Its fine to paint plastic tanks..you just need to use the right paint to make it resistant to any spills you might have when filling it up. Fuel on the inside of the tank is not going to harm an exterior paint finish..:bonk:

Im not sure if the E tank fits the SM though? hopefully somebody else can answer this.

It fits, but the paint won't hold due to gas fumes coming out thru the plastic. Same as pasting decals over it I believe.

Ive seen plenty of plastic tanks painted and none of them have had any problems. The last one my friend had painted was for his old Yamaha IT 465 dirt bike which he has recently restored, its had quite a few tanks of fuel put thru it and still looks as good as the day it was painted.

every wonder why tank decals bubble on a plastic fuel tanks?its because gas fumes migrate thru the plastic tank.the same will happen if you paint it.seen it happen many times.the sm tank has different mounting points where the seat joins up with the tank.the front mounts are the same but the the e model tank does not have any rear mount holes on it.it might work but ive never tried it

Don't think the paint will last, a friend of mine got his ktm 525 tank painted by a professional and now it has HUGE bubbles. He is going to remove the paint and buy another tank.

Don't know if the paint will hold up ,but, I have an E tank on my S.Which should have the same mounting points as a SM.
I only have 1 bolt holding the lower front E mounts on the right side.I think that was where the horn was mounted. Then I safety wired the rear(coudn't find the stock E strap),and bolted up the six should screws. Feels solid to me,and I have been riding it like that for the last six weekends.

I have been informed the trick to painting the tank is using one of the liquid tank liners to seal it from the inside. Product like por 15
