I have lived in Palmdale for about 6 years, grew up in Downey / Norwalk area.
I bought my first house on the east sied of town Ave S / 40 St. East would not recommend buying in that area some good people but alot of low income families. My second house is West Side Palmdale / Quartz Hill. I would say I feel safer in that area of Palmdale then I do when I go down to Norwalk / Downey area to visit family. Palmdale has it's problems but please don't even compare it to Compton or even some areas in the Valley.

And for those that live in Santa Clarita area that think that Palmdale is so bad your just blind and living in the dark.

Sorry to be so harsh but if you don't live there DONT COMMIT ON THE AREA.

I would think that you would mainly want to stay on the west side in either palmdale or lancaster. You can always check out Rosamond, about 10 minutes from lancaster and I'm pretty sure cheaper housing as it is Kern County and not LA county.

i'll keep that in mind. how is acton, i hear that it doesn't get as hot or windy there. but it doesn't look that far from palmdale so not sure if thats true.

Acton is much nicer...less crime...rural lifestyle, conservative political views, and about 10 miles south of Palmdale. Lots of riding if you're plated. Gotta drive "into town" to do the grocery shopping and such. Only issue is most of the community is zoned as horse property and such, so most lots are at least 2 1/2 acres, which jacks the cost of a home up a bit.

Because no one can sell a house for anything so they're all up for rent.

I would look for a house on the west side of Palmdale or in Quarts Hills (Nice area). Avoid getting a house between 20th Street east and Sierra Highway this is area is what I call Pompton. The east side of Palmdale does have some nice neighborhoods with new housing but look out for section 8 housing which is prevalent on the east side.

I moved out to the Antelope Valley in 1954 to work for NAA flight test. I retired from NASA Edwards in 1985. I live on the east side of Lancaster with all the slipper people. It looks just like the LA I left. For jobs, look at Scaled Composites in Mojave , an easy 45 minute ride from Lancaster. Their hiring and their on the cutting edge. Also Calspan just opened in Mojave. There used to be a time when we could ride from East Lancaster to Desert View Highlands, to Quartz Hill to climb the wall and then back home all dirt. The guys are steering you right, pick the west side. I still stick to the east side because I can ride from my place to as far as I want. Get an apartment until you get a job. In your position I`d say ,riding areas are for after.

i'm not sure if you guys are firmiliar with Oxnard (my home town)but it has it's bad parts and good parts also. it kind of funny because once you crossed over a certain street it went bad, it's sounding the same way for palmdale.

Yep everywhere has there good and bad spots for sure.Yeah my main residence is in oxnard as well and I also have a bit of property in AV too.I would try as stated to find something on the westside too.You might also consider the rosamond /tehachapi/mojave area as there is some good deals on land and house out that side. From my place in Oxnard to my property is 110 mi pretty close. One thing I strongly suggest is getting a dualsport bike with plates and then you can pretty much go wherever,I ride my 640 adv from oxnard to my AV property all the time on some pretty cool routes out in the desert! Too many options take your time!
