I've done alot of searching on DRZ headlight bulb upgrades and found great info for the S, SM, and E models. I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions for going to a brighter bulb on the K model. (Yes, someone actually bought a DRZ without the button and battery.) The bulb is different than on the E model with just the two nubs on the bottom and a H3 style won't work, but I believe its the same specs 12v 35w. Any superior knowledge would help. Thanks.

just wondered if you had a picture of the bulb. I think I know which bulb it is and I think the brightest you can go will be 45w.
by the way I love the K model.. wish I had one but for the road its hard to think of life without that button.. :D

I never pass the oportunity to point out "K" is a year code for a DRZ400 not model. However, the kicker model has the same head light as the early E model and is 55 watts. As far as I know, the replacement bulb is only available from Suzuki.

Not so I expect it is the H3 bulb, mine was. In some cases the H6M will fit as a straight swap and give you main and dip.

My Kicker (no need for that woosy electric start!) is a 2001 and had the H3(C?) bulb I bought an H6M and carefully reshaped the seating ring on the bulb with a dremel and soldered two connectors to the bulb, I also had to widen the aperture in the headlight bulb holder as the H6m bulb is a little fatter but I now have main and dip for £6 and carry the old H3 as a get me home spare in case it blows. The pattern is a little tighter than I like but is much better than some of the after market stuff out there, although the new polisport has had some good reports. I intend to get a later SM or E light when I find one cheap enough on ebay, I also want to retain the rubber strap mounting not have to use the metal brackets as on the S.

This is what mine looked like before I opened it up a little

Ok, thanks for the tips. Noble, thanks for the correction. The above photo looks almost like it, with two exceptions: the back of the lense is stamped 12v 35w, and the way the bulb and harness is held to the lense is different. It's basically got three prongs and a push and turn set up, like some automotive styles. Sorry I don't have pix of my own to post. Regardless, it looks like I'll be getting out the soldering iron, butt connectors, bailing wire, and duct tape to rig something up. Anybody know how high I can go with wattage?

You do have to watch the distance of the filament from the reflector. It is important for beam shape. I installed the H6m because I wanted a twin filament but if you are not bothered then the H3 will do fine, go for the PIAA 55w the stator can easily cope, it has a 150w output. Is your lens/reflector glass? if its plastic I guess it might over heat?

does your bulb look like this ?

and your lens like this ?

if so, then you probably have a plastic lens cover that will overheat if you adapt a decent bulb to fit

I did a similar mod to the one here, using a new lens from baja designs and a 80/80W PIAA bulb. Also wired in a relay and heavier ground and power wires.

I installed a PIAA H4 "Extreme White Plus" 4000 Kelvin-12v/60/55W=110/100W. Meaning the bulb's Candle Watts are equivalent to 110/100W. I was thinking of using the H4 Kelvin 3800Low Beam-5800High Beam-12v/60/55W=135/125W, but I was unsure if it would be to hot for the housing. There is a more Notably Brighter & MORE FOCUSED BEAM.

Bill 1960, that's it! Last night I ghetto wired a 55w H3 bulb into it and ran it for 5 minutes in the garage. Quite a bit brighter than the old stock one but now you have me concerned about overheating the plastic lense. Thanks for the link to your mod!

Thats the H6m (which I fonverted to) not the H3c. My E light (photo posted earlier) has a glass reflector and lens. If it plastic I'd run it with the 55w bulb and just keep an eye on it!

I dont know of anyone actually testing/running a 55W bulb in the plastic lens, mainly because of heat concerns.
If you do run it for a while with no adverse effects, please let us know.

Here in Cambodia, all the Japenese delivery S models have the plastic lens.
Most people cant be bothered with the bajadesigns conversion but would probably go for adapting a 55W bulb if there were no heating issues.

Ultimately, I personally prefer the bajadesigns lens. It has a bigger reflector and 80W bulbs can be run without overtaxing the DRZ stator, but it pays to beef up the wiring as well

I think the new Polisport is getting good reviews and that runs an H4, or at least thats what a recent thread said. I havent been able to confirm that from any other web site yet.

Ah, that would explain the H4, I wonder if I could get one to fit in the E headlight surround/plastic?
