CRF450X Tire Sizes

Whatever you do, don't order a 120/90-18 Michellin rear tire. What a joke. It is about as wide as my 90/21-21 Dunlop 742FAJ front tire and I'm not kidding.:worthy: :eek: :banghead:

I just now figured that out like late last night. Had to once again race the YZ250 since I wouldn't even ride my 450X with that POS rear tire. What really sucks is the rear shock on the YZ has NO rebound dampening at all so doing handstands is expected:thumbsdn: :worthy: :eek:

Yeah, I noticed that at the shop, when I was picking out tires. I put 5 tires next to each other standing up, and the Mich 120/90 looked like a 90/80, in comparison to the Maxxis 110/90, Dunlop 120/100 606, etc

Did you get it from Cycle Gear by chance? They will take it back if you're not 100% happy with it. :worthy:

I wish I would of known. John I would of brought you a tire. I have some spares with a lot of life still in them. That was a tough course today. With some got ya's. I almost didn't race. With that wind blowing. It was a last min. decision.

Thanks, Charlie! I have some old tires with good tread in my garage but it was 10P last night and I was looking at that rear tire and said to myself "no way". It is ridiculous! Too late to change it and get any sleep at all so I loaded the YZ and made the best of it which is not good but still got a finisher pin....LOL. I only got blown off the course twice so I'm happy. Brutal.

Have you got a pic? I used to run michelins on my RMZ and they were ok. I noticed their sizes were one size small.. ie their 120 was similiar to another manufacturers 110...

If you go on Motosport.com they have the conversion listed for the Michelins. It says, for an example, 130/70-19 Michelin = 110/90-19 other tire. I have no idea why they do this.

I've not purchased Michelin tires in the past and boy oh boy did I learn a lesson. My local shop will give me some money for them though so it is not a total bust at least just a pain in the ass.

To do an accurate comparison you need to squeeze the unmounted tyre with your hands where it would attach to a rim in much the same way as the mounted tyre is being squeezed to the rim. Otherwise the mounted tyre is always going to look thinner (esp if it has high pressure).

Michelin sizes are strange.
Bridgestone and Kenda are very similar.

I use Kenda 120/100-18
But my mate has 110/100-18.

Both run well.

Sizing between kendas is a little off as well.

I have a trakmaster II and a carlsbad both in 110/100-18. The track master looks to be about the same size as an average 110/100 (maybe a little smaller) and the carlsbad looks like a freakin 120/90 dunlop :thumbsup:

Next time I order a trakmaster its gonna be a 120. The 110 looks kinda wimpy on the back of a 450

I had a chance to get a Kenda Carlsbad 120/100-18 today. It looks like a monster. Are they any good?

They're rated as a intermediate/hard terrain tire. I picked it up because it was on clearance at cycle gear for $32. Did a search on here and supposedly it ain't bad.

Mounted up the trakmaster last week because it has taller, more spaced apart knobs which should be better for wet conditions. I'll try out the carlsbad during the summer :thumbsup:

If you end up running a michelin, go with a 140/80/18.... About the same as a 120/100/18. The S12 is a great mud tire and pretty dam good on hard pack when new, but will chunk up very fast on hard terain and lose all predictability very fast. Not sure about any of the others. Here's a few pics when i had the 140/80 S12 on.... notice the chunkage starting on the last pic with only a couple rides on it!

I just stay with the good ole faithful 120/100/18 dunlop 739 desert AT on the rear now, predictable to the very end!
