The bottom of the tube is filthy, of course, but the the top 4" is clean.

You're right...But I'm sure if crud is collecting 5" from the top, there is some that must be getting through...I believe a small part of reason the top part is clean is simply because the oily blowout spits it away from there...

When we ran our half milers and TT'rs, we ran clear hoses from the breathers, and the intrusion of dirt up the hose could be easily seen. It was never more than the first 8~10' or so up the hose.

Here's the $2.50/10minute solution I came up with while rebuilding my YZ.

That plays straight into the hands of gravity. It creates a direct air path that is short enough to allow the engine to draw through the full length of it at idle, and whatever gets in the end of the hose will fall straight in.
