WR450 gas tanks-IMS v Clarke

Recommended Posts

This has most likely been asked once to many but...

What is everyone using for a larger gas tank on their 2007/08 WR's?

Have had a bit of a search and seems the Clarke is well received, has anyone got an IMS? The Clarke has more capacity but does it make the bike feel to big/top heavy?

What is the quality of each tank, does one fit better and is better finished/made.

Any feedback is appreciated and post any pic's...:D

I have an ims tank they do have a few fittment issues. but they are lower profile then the clarks

Ims use yz rad shouds . or not all your bolts will line up with the wr ones . But it also makes yz graphics fit your wr.

2 If you use the stock petcock it faces the wrong way . I just got one for a 06 wr and put it on to fix this issue..

The only real fitment issue other than what Tweav said about the shrouds and petcock is the seat. It's an easy fix with a dremel on the front seat mount hole and a washer or two on the mount tab for said hole on the tank.

Here's the IMS in clear on an 07

I put an IMS on an '08 (same fitment as '07). Other than having to buy YZ shrouds, it is a great tank. Very solidly mounted and well designed. I did not have any trouble with my seat tongue slipping under the mount on the tank. It is snug, but not like I had to use force or anything to get it under. No washers or mods for mine. Also, to be honest, I went with the stock petcock turned backwards and a new piece of straight hose. It's really no more difficult to turn and off than before. With that said, I would like the extra 1/2 gal or so that the Clarke offers, but still think the IMS is a better looking tank.

I have an IMS 3.2? gallon tank for my 07 and a clarke 2.8? I might be off a tiny bit on the sizes, but I got the clarke because I really didn't like the way that the ims fit, and it leaked from around the lid. I did not have fitment issues with either tank, but I like the way that the clarke looks and feels better.

Another thumbs up for the IMS. Nothing against the Clarke, just really happy with my IMS. I have noticed a little fuel-spillage when totally full but very little. Fit and finish is great and I truly can't tell much of a difference in feel. I do notice a slight difference in gripping with my knees but it's so close to stock it's hardly worth mentioning.

I also did the factory backwards petcock and would agree that it's no more difficult than stock to turn off and on.

I'd buy the IMS again tomorrow!

On my Yamahas I prefer IMS, but my other bikes have Clarke because I've had less initial fit issues than with IMS. Overall it usually comes down to availability when I'm ordering.

The only thing I didn't like about the IMS, and I really didn't like it, is the front mounting setup. I hated the idea of having to deal with that bracket at the front of the tank.? Oh yeah, and the deal about having to run YZ shrouds.? Other than that, it looks like a well made tank.

Does Clarke make a model for an 03 WR450? Their site only has a model listed for the 07-08's.

I have a Clarke 2.8 on my '06 WR450 but bought the YZ tank which was code No 11442. The link below shows the 11442 being for 2003 - 2005.

Clarke advised I need a YZ seat & shrouds but on the WR '06 they used YZ style shrouds & the WR seat fitted without any mods.

Hope it helps.

P.S The Clarke tank has been great & I swap from the std to the bigger one regularly depending on the ride & no fitment problems.

Cheers from Oz.

just to clarify you dont actualy HAVE to get the yz shrouds for the IMS tank. the stock wr shrouds will work. the three outside screws(bolts ) will go in with a little effert but the top one under the seat will not.there will be a little gap between the top shroud mount and the shroud. this makes a bit harder to get the seat on but i mean if you dont was to spend the extra money on the new shrouds and graphics( you would want to to look good)then you can make it work.
