use a non-sythetic for break-in in the engine (switch to sythetic after break-in) and your favorite tranny oil (bel-ray for me) in the tranny. most bikes don't come with enough, so drain and refill with the proper amount right away.

Dave, I ran one change of "dino" oil ( 30 mins,) and then when to Syn. It was too soon. My bike used a little oil until I went back to regular oil for a few hours.

Oil opinions are a dime a dozen here but.... I ran HP4M ( engine side) after I talked to a Team Honda and Team Blackfoot mechanics at the US Open a year ago. I was told the valve train likes the "cushioning" effect of the moly...funny I never had any valve issues like some of the '02's. :D - FWIW Tranny side's not picky but I ran Honda Trans oil anyway. "Saving" money on a 7K bike didn't seem like a good idea to me. :)

thanks Chris.. do you happen to know how many ounces goes in the trans? i put the amount that the manual says..and no drip out the drain bolt..it took 22 ounces to get a drip..mxa says the amount to cause a drip is still not enough..

don't use the tranny oil check hole, just put in the required amount. the check hole topic has been well discussed (try a search) majority agree it's not necessary.

I also agree with Chris, I ran the same oil (Honda HP4M) and had no problems.

Transmission only needs 600cc of oil, that is just a little more than 1/2 of one bottle, if you put in 22oz you have too much in there.

I run 650cc in the tranny, a bit extra is not hurting anything at all....and it makes sure and avoids the dreaded floppy kickstarter syndrome :-)

Amen... the tranny shouldn't have presure (and all the other stuff) like the engine side so a little extra shouldn't hurt. I wouldn't go over board, but I always put a in a little extra too.
