getting new bike

hey guy i am in the market to get a new bike am lookin in to a new08 or 09 yz450 it would be the first thumper i would ever own, but am a little gun shy about getting one thou , how much money do you guy spend on maintenance, i have rod 2t since i have been riding i do all of my own work on my bike except revalve on the f/s, is working on the 4t that much more challenging. i also worrie about reliability i ride about 3 time a week 2 twice at the track 1 in the desert im a strong rider, or should i stick with what i know and get a 09 yz smoker

I am still deciding as well. I would suggest staying with the 2 stroke. Its much more fun to ride, cheaper to own, and sounds better. Only reason I am udecided is I am waiting to see if our rules follow suit with AMA. If I can run the 2t with the 250fs I am in otherwise I will buy the 450.

My maintenance schedule consists of changing oil and cleaning air filters and not much else, outside of tires. The 450 is a little tough on those. Timing chain every year, year and a half or so, rings every year and a half or two, that's been it.

the 2 stroke (is) cheaper to own...

Debatable, especially based on what my thumpers have cost me.

...Its much more fun to ride...

what about the valves how hard are they to do how often do u shim them

I check them every month or two. I have never had to adjust the valves on any of the 3 YZ450's I personally own.

Yeah, oil changes and filter cleaning is about it for me too. My valves are still in spec and the motor runs great. I was going to do a new piston for this year, but the bike runs so good I didn't mess with it. I'll do that for '09 though. Oh, did I mention my bike is an '04? Really, just keep up on oil changes and keep your air filter clean. These things are about as bomb proof as it gets. It is much harder on the rear tires though. I'm guessing the 450 will eat two by the time my 250 needs one.

I had over 200+ hrs on my 06 yz450f and never had to adjust the valves or do any engine work. Started(s) first kick hot or cold and I all I did was religious oil changes and air filter chanes as well.

Might I had, all 200hrs were race/track hrs. Almost zero trails or desert etc.

i love my 06yz450f, i change oil every 2-3 hours and filter every ride.
bike have over 100 and still runs like new.

I agree with every single word Gray has said here. I do miss hearing a smoker go through a set of whoops though, but who doesn't? I should also point out that if your going to get a thumper, and maintenance intervals (adjust valves) is a concern, then yamahas seem to have the best track record there.

Me. BIG two strokes, 400's and 500's sound alright, but the rest of them sound like bees on crack.
