I am coming off of a 1996 cr250 with 13/51 gearing. I ride mostly tight woods, been on bikes 4yrs and not a real fast rider. What gearing should I go to on the CRF? I am not worried about top speed because I seldom have areas to get wide open and dont want it geared so low that I am constantly shifting (also not interseted in auto clutches at this time). I am thinking of the same gearing as my old cr250 with ironman sprockets and a DID X-ring chain. I have only ridden the bike once (winter here now) and am trying to get the bike ready for when spring comes.

Also, I know most of the reviews of the ironman sprockets have been great, but there isnt much material there, has anyone had any problems with the sprockets breaking or cracking?

Are you riding woods or MX? You might want to start with what you are looking for from the way the bike performs now. I am not trying to be a smart ass or anything, but it is kind of hard to give advice if we don't know what result you are trying to obtain. I do both woods and mx but mainly woods. I have a 51 and love it.

I ride mx only and use stock gearing. Works great for me.
Also, I just put my ironman/DID combo on today. The ironman was a good bit heavier than stock so I am confident it is stronger. Besides, you can't beat a 1 year warranty on sprockets.

I just put on a 51. Havent ridden it yet. The 52 was to low (but the wheelie factor is great!). I ride MX.

My dad has a CRF with a 12 counter shaft and a 56 rear. It is the lowest he could find and he loves it. It will still hit 70mph. He does shift alot though. He rides everything but MX.
