differences between 99-00 carbs wr400

Recommended Posts

Anyone put a 00 carb on their 98/99 WR400 ? im guessing the hot start must be different, been trying to find some pics, Does the 00 carb use the same principal for hot start as the 99 ? or should I say is it adaptable. My 99 has had its AP mechanism busted off the carb, this is not a part that is available, so im going to track down another carb for it but thought I may be better off with the later model, A previous owner has at some stage thought the AP was surplus to the bikes needs and busted it off :bonk: The bike goes fine under normal acceleration but struggles at off idle or sudden change in throttle eg to do a wheelie :lame:

If you're gonna replace the carb definitely get a 2nd gen or later FCR. The 98-00 have the 1st gen FCR are they are known for breaking their slide plates and being sucked into the engine. If the hotstart is integrated onto the carb (just like the choke) then it's at least a 2nd gen. If it a separate plunger attached to the frame (as yours will be now) then it's 1st gen. One thing to look out for is the vacuum nipple on the head must be blocked for the 2nd gen carb to function properly. Another option would be to get an Edelbrock carb, never used one but they are apparently much easier to work with and jet, and will smooth out the power a lot.

The 2000 WR400 had the second generation carb - hotstart knob on the carb.
