So as few of you may know, my '86 XR80 has a 1980 XL80S bottom end on it. Im 100% sure its the XL bottom end because the numbers match up with my manual and its silver. But I went down a long dirt road for the first time with my XR and i swear i counted 5 gears. On the way back, yup, 5 gears. I went back and forth twice and counted 5. Even my dad did so i cant be miss counting them. So is it possible that whoever had the bike before me threw in another gear in the XL tranny? Is that even possible? Im extremely puzzled with this thing, just when i thought i had i figured out haha

thanks

Why are you under the impression the XL came with a 4 speed? Honda's microfiche shows 5 gears.

The Honda XL80S-80 was sold in 1980 and was available in one color: Helios Red. The fuel tank stripe was red, yellow, and white. The "HONDA" decal was red outlined in white. The seat was black without a side logo. The frame was black. The engine was an 80cc OHC single cylinder with a 4-speed transmission and manual clutch. The serial number began HD04-5000014.

All of the XL80S's had 4 speed transmissions. Someone may have put an XR80 tranny into the XL80S motor.

I'm not sure as I've never done it myself but I beleive it could be done. Here's a parts lookup for the XL80 gears, you could compare them to the XR80 and see how the part numbers match up [minus the extra gear of course] :

Wish I could help more.

Say, just out of curiousity, how many wires do you have coming from the engine case? Do you have the two coils behind the flywheel [1 ignition and one lighting]?
Is the condensor behind the flywheel or is it up under the gas tank near the coil?

I dont know the exact number of wires coming out of the case, but theirs a bunch that just lead to no were.

and i think the condenser is under the gas tank, im not exactly sure what it looks like.. lol

Ah Ok, the reason I asked is b/c the 5 spd XR engine only has one wire coming from the case, where as the XL has four. The XL engine also has the condensor [small cylinderical thing that stops the spark from scattering] under the flywheel but being that you have more than one wire coming from the engine case/coil, XL serial number, it sure sounds to me like you have the lower XL engine. The only reason I can think of why of it would have a 5 spd tranny is it has the XR gear set or it's an XL 100 :excuseme:
