Why to buy a WR rather than a YZ????

Recommended Posts

I will get to work on the pics. Hope you still like it then! :worthy:

The three custom tasks included making a bracket for the YZ front number plate, moving the "power on" button (the one attached to the upper triple clamp on the right), and eliminating the "clutch in" sensor for the starter.

1) Bracket - made out of stock alum from local building supply. Mounts to the two holes on the upper triple clamp (speedo currently uses the two holes). In the middle of this bracket I drilled a hole to place a stud. The stud was simply a bolt about 1" long placed through the hole and locked down with a nut. I think I used a M6. The stud is then used for attaching to a tab located on the top/rear center of the YZ plate. To mount it all, I added a 3/4" length bushing around the stud, washer, number plate tab, washer, and then nylock nut.

2) Power switch - This is only mod on the bike I cannot return to "normal". After removing the power switch I cut the steel bracket flush with the base of the plastic cover. I then removed the handle bar pad foam. With an x-acto knife I cut out a portion of the foam to make space for the switch. Take the time to make the space tight enough to hold the switch snug. I then cut a hole in the pad cover so I could use the switch and see the red LED. My cut on the cover was a bit off the first time so take your time, i.e., mine is not "pretty". But it's cool.

3) Clutch switch - This one is a little fuzzy in my mind. If I recall correctly, I simply made a jumper using two electrical connectors to short the clutch switch sensor. When you start unplugging all the wires that were behind the light you will see what I mean. I just plugged the jumper into the connector and taped it up.

I almost forgot. If you remove the speedo you will need to replace the sensor on the right of the front hub. I ordered my spacer from http://www.flatlandracing.com/.

Hope this helps some without being too confusing!

I'll try and get the pics in the next day or so.

Perfect, thanks for taking the time explaining it. Much appreciated and definitely looking forward to the pics.?

The 03 and 04 YZF's were 4-speed and 5-speed 05 and up.

Steve

06 and up have 5 speed, Pretty sure 05 was still 4 speed

Edit: regarding tunefx, it only costs like 500 dolars plus labor to install wide ratio gears into a yz. So then adding up all the mods to make your wr a yz, just drop a wide ratio tranny in the yz and its a wr with good suspension and alot less weight, not to mention a ton more power out of the box.

And, I would support this 100% (plus the 18" rear) if I were to do it again! On the other hand, at 46, part of the fun is, if you don't mind me saying, pimp'n my ride! :D But, 450-F is totally accurate--and it would be a beast! :blah:

My lights and all will go back on once I motard the 450--and I'll be having fun riding it to the office and back! Then I will fight the gravity pulling me to the Orange as I contemplate the FI YZ in '10.

One other consideration here. I had to have the front/rear suspension rebuilt b/c I'm 6'1" and 240 lbs. Meaning, no matter what, YZ or WR, I would have to rebuild the suspension. Not b/c I'm a great rider but b/c I'm a bit heavy. Not a bit, more like way too heavy!

Finally, my overweight body loves the e-start! Especially when stalled on the side of a hill.

All this is "food" for thought. Sorry, that was bad. If I were in riding shape again, like my young years, I wouldn't hesitate on the YZ with the WR gears. Add the exhaust and have one of the several great suspension houses do their magic and game on!!! But then I would find it neccessary to add the HC pistons and as much titanium as I can find. You see, the fun can never stop!

Took pictures today. Now I just need to find my adapter to load them from the memory card to the PC.

Ride safely friends.

I hear you can get more HP out of an RMZ450 just by switching it the a FCR and ditching the FI. probably just suzuki being over eager to have the first... wait... Second fuel injected production bike.

nothing wrong with the flatside, so you can have a lot of happy days blazing between your home and office knowing FI isn't whats all hyped up to be

You are reading my mind! A lot cheaper to work on than my HyperMotard (Duc) too!! :worthy:

you gotta Hypermotard. not fair. those are sick bikes

Yep, it's sick. First street bike I've owned. The best way to describe it is to imagine riding a motarded version of your KTM with 1100 CCs. It rides so much like a dirt bike it's hard to believe. I smile ear-to-ear every time I ride it to work--or the hills, or the...

What makes it more sick is I put the racing cams, pistons, exhaust, and more into it. ?

I can never leave anything as is. As long as I take care of my 'honey do' list!

I have the pictures up. Instead of loading them all here you can go to my gallery if you

On some of the pics I have captions to explain a few details (scroll down in the gallery). If you move your mouse to the main picture you will see a popup menu where you can view a larger size picture or download it.

Let me know if you have any questions.

And before you ask, yes, I do ride it! ?

for a second, I thought you were talking about your ducati. :busted:

I like how you put your power button, but the way I ride, I used to hit the bar pad a lot, and now I have a stabilizer there to smack me around a bit.

but you know how it is on steep hill climbs, I mean, you do have the bike that won pikes peak hillclimb. :worthy:

I used zip ties on the corners to hold the plate to the WR's top headlight mount

Zip ties would work! And, save a bunch of time!!

That hill climb story was great. Your going to have to get yourself a Hyper.

One more question about your headlight tunefx. What exactly was the reason for shorting out the clutch switch sensor with a jumper? I noticed it wasnt plugged into the computer at all and just wanted to get a better clarification on why this procedure needs to be done. Thanks again!!

Himsa, sorry I'm late reading this. Now that I think about it, it had nothing to do with the speedo/light removal. I installed ASV levers which had no means of supporting the clutch contact. Sorry for the confusion. Nice catch on your part!!

I've got a 08 yz450 and have ridden a 07wr450 on a 24 hr team. The wr is a great bike with just the basic mods. But, if you are looking to win the A class at the next gncc or worcs then you want the yz. If you want to roost your friends and not have to worry about getting home before dark, get the wr. If you do not want any compremises but need lights a yz with a wr ignition is the answer. Forget the wr gearbox and 18" rear wheel, in my humble opinion. They really don't add to the bikes ability to get from point A to B as fast as possible. The best off road racers are riding motocrossers with tuned suspension. That is why the factory guys use them. Don't say the Yamaha guys are riding wr's. They're not. In fact, the only factory ampro guy on a WR was Jason Raines. He is now on a yz250 and his results are making me think a 2 stroke may be in my future.

Thad Duvall rode a WR250F last year, now he's on a YZ450F.

http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/277/214/Motorcycle-Article/2008-Am-Pro-Yamaha-WR250F-1st-Ride.aspx

the new WR's only go like 80mph, and I clocked my friends 08 YZ250F at 75mph next to my WR. mine went 93mph, and the gearing was not too wide where it would hinder acceleration, but then again it wasn't track optimized either.

I think the WR and YZ cases are different. the stator cover looks different, so I don't know if you can simply swap a WR stator over. I may be wrong though, but I'm sure if I were, trail tech would have a stator for the YZ, not just the WR. http://www.trailtech.net/electrical_systems_yamaha.html

No you cannot simply swap the ignition. In fact what it takes is a wr crank end, side cover, flywheel, ignition, wiring harness, cdi and battery. Not easy but it is the only way to get Baja caliber lights on a 06 or newer yz. That is what I have on my bike. For all practical purposes if you need a 100w stator go with the wr. I had a yz, ebay and some yz bucks.:excuseme:

Sorry to revive an old thread, but in searching I thought it was better that starting a new topic. Just curious if you had to use a resistor kit to prevent battery problems? I want to remove the headlight (taillight is already removed) because I think it looks better with the numberplate. Were these the only 2 mods done? My bike is an 07 WR450. Any issues?
