98 WR400 tail light question.

I recently aquired a 98WR400. Both the headlight and tail light bulb were blown. I put a replacement bulb I had for my DRZ4 in it. It lit up but blew out when I reved the bike up. Now my question is this, it does not have a battery so therefore it has no rectifier to convert from AC to DC. I wonder if there is a different bulb for AC tail light than there is for one with a battery that uses DC.

Sounds like the voltage regulator is not working. It should be located on the left side of the steering head with two wire connections, blue and black. Check the connections, if they are ok, check the voltage in and out.
