07 450 With A 06 Can

Recommended Posts

A few days back I mentioned I was going to match a 06 can with a 07 header on my 07. The ID of the 06 can is too tight at the mid-pipe to fit onto the 07 header.

I did put the whole 06 system(oem) on my 07,fit everywhere perfect,I did not get a chance to test.

Side notes: The ID of the 07 can is 30mm measured at the outlet

The ID of the 06 can is 39mm measured at the outlet.huge difference.

I did not measure the headpipe, but the ID 06 is smaller than the 07,but the 06 can outlet is larger.

The 07 ID head pipe is larger than the 06,but the can outlet is smaller than the 06. OFFSET.

I just got back in after a 1/2 HR testing the whole 06 system on my 07.

Believe it or not it was weaker everywhere,it was lean on the main.I corrected that and it still did not have that hard charge the 07 pipe has up top. Talk about loud and obnoxious, the head pipe and can only have 2 rides on it,I know this personally.I was suprised I did not pick up any bottom end, infact that was choked up too.The power with the 06 pipe definetly did not have the bottom grunt and mid-up thickness like the 07. This was not a jetting issue, the 06 pipe just does not work well with the 07 motor.

On a side note I had a left over new bridgestone 401 left over from my RMZ450. UP front it ran a 90-100-21. I threw it on my YZ,just to see. Talk about being planted, the steering did slow down, but it stuck.

The cams, both of them, are different in each year, '06-'08, and the '06 full system may simply not be a good match to the '07. It works exceptionally well on an '08, but most of that is because the '08 has such a poor system on it to begin with, and that cannot be said of an '07. Besides, almost anything will give an '08 huge gains in low/mid power.

Truthfully, the '06 system isn't bad on an '06, but it can be improved upon even there, so it's not as if the pipe is just better than the '07, or anything. I know the DRD systems on my two '06's made a very noticeable difference.

Interesting experiment, though. Thanks for putting the results up.

You know Gray you hit the nail right on the head, the 07 pipe is matched for the 07 cams and vice versa. I FOUND OUT SOMETHING VERY INTERESTING.

The exhaust port gasket for the head pipe, the ID is too small.Match it up to the pipe and it protrudes into the pipe too. I tried to open up the ID on the gasket,it became a mess. I grabbed a high temp o-ring the ID cleared the port and pipe, wanted to see if what I thought was true. Long story short the motor REVS REALLY FREE NOW,CAN YOU SAY THICK. Pulls definetly longer.:ride:?

Use a piece of soft copper wire, about 8 gauge, bend it in a circle to fit the port, and trim the ends so they butt up snugly. Much better in the long run.

I agree ,I was using the o-ring temporarily. You know what that is a good idea, let me ask you this. Would aluminum foil tape last, wrapped around the copper wire?.I would like to add just a little thickness to the circumference of the gasket I am making.
