With the Iron butt just a day away I thought Id put together a few items I usally carry in the old back pack for desert riding.

Tells us what you carry, you might give some one an idea that will make their life easier.

#1 - Full liter of water (camelback)
#2 - Extra bottle of water (usually just a 20oz)
#3 - Food bars (I dont want to get stuck 40 miles from no where with no food)
#4 - Spare tire tube - at least one (One is better than none)
#5 - Tire spoons (gotta be able to get the tire off)
#6 - JB stick weld (the old staple but in a firmer stick ready to mix,(learned this from last years iron butt where a crank case got punctured)
#7 - WD40 pen (just enough oil to help get a tire back on the rim or loosen a fouled part full of dirt)
#8 - Cell phone (they usally wont have coverage, but id rather have it and be able to only get a text through if need be. And of corse I turn it off)
#9 - Back packer fisrt aid kit
#10 - Tools ( have a small tool kit bolted to my front fender that always has a few items, spark plug, plug tool, sockets for most bolts/screws, srewdrivers, (i buy cheap ones and file the handles down so they as slim) zip ties, electrical tape, tie wire, foam ear plugs (help plug a hole)
#11 - Extra fuel bottle (first for me, just got it!)
#12 - Extra oil (not on my new bike but on older ones even if it was a very small leak I didnt want to run out of oil.
#13 - Lighter (might make a ranger turn over in his grave but if I gotta spend the night out on accident Im having a fire)

This may seem excessive to some but I carry all of these things in a small back pack and fender bag, Could be just enough to save a long walk back to the truck.

Aaaaaaaaahhhh………………………….., water, a screwdriver, chapstick and TP. I guess I should carry a few more things but I guess only bring the essentials. The screwdriver is actually for protection only.

Actually I didn’t see a pump on your list. Gotta be able to get air in the new tube.

Friend of mine from Guam taught me a cool(simple) trick for hot weather stuff like this. If you can, fill up a camel pack 1/3'rd to 1/2 and freeze it. The next morning fill the rest with water. This way you have Ice water all day.

Ah, you are missing two key items. Room key for the five star hotel and and a fist full of singles ;)

Have a great and save ride, I hope you need none of your emergency kit except the room key and singles.

Canned "cat or dog food"....if we are talking about serious survival! Anything else you will have eaten before you really need it!

I alway carry a space blanket. Useful for signaling, hiding from skeeters, and warmth.

Micro fiber Windshirt- weighs nothing, packs well and works as well or better than a rain jacket.

Heavy Duty zip ties in case I am too lazy to change the tube or close enough to the truck to just ride it out.

Siphon hose- slips in around the camelback bladder.

Small travel size bug spray- have been stuck in the Mad River trail (Trav's Yellow Loop:p ) out of gas waiting for buddies to return with fuel. This is when we found out that 4 people can huddle under a space blanket to avoid skeeters.

Tool kit/Fanny Pack that nearly all of my basic maintenance is done with. Includes spare master link, exam gloves, pen type magnet and other unknown items that I cant ride without.

Complete tube pack with tools/air pump and standard duty tube. laminated map slips in under the hold down straps.

On this ride I will be carrying a programmable (fire district issue) VHF radio for emergency use. I will suggest running a spare air filter or skins. It will be dusty. Dont pack too much stuff it will just make you tired and sore.

see ya all Saturday...TONY
